HOCKEY OUTLOOK—UMC has a good mixture of returning and incoming players for the 1997-1998 season. The veteran forward line of Jason Brunette, Mike Elmore, and Mark Olsonawski is as good as any small college hockey line in the nation. Brunette has world class talent, winning the gold medal as a member of the United States Junior Olympic team a few years ago; Elmore is a fifth year senior and has a national championship ring from UMC’s junior college days; and Olsonawski has as much pure talent as any in small college hockey. As a collegiate independent, UMC plays opponents from a variety of levels, including Bemidji State University, recent NCAA division II champions; St. John’s University, third in the nation at the division III level last year; and the University of Manitoba, division I caliber in Canadian University hockey. UMC faces tough competition and will be competitive with such teams. Probably the success of the season will depend upon the contributions of incoming players. A few of the incoming players include Jeff Horner, Minnedosa, MB; Jesse Beck, East Grand Forks; Kelly Kilgore, Grand Forks; Mike Gillam, Winnipeg, MB; Chad Inderrieden, St. Cloud; Scott Swenson, Culver; Derek Hoffbauer, Proctor; Jacob Draeger, Roseau; Bobby Benbo, South St. Paul; and Chad Sperling, Crookston.
