Fall Semester Update
Best wishes to everyone at UMC.  We've had a great year together, and 2001 will even be better.

Student enrollment is up, student spirit and participation in events is increasing, and the feedback from students, employers, other educational institutions, and the public continues to be more and more positive.  This happened not because of administration, but because of the work of everyone.

At the pre-compact meeting with Provost Bruininks a few weeks ago, he asked that we provide more detail in three areas:  FY01 Near Term Needs (managing enrollment growth, gender equity, and unfunded Crookston Study and Review Plan needs); Technology Development and Assessment; and Regional Economic Development.  We followed up with more information last week.  He indicated that he would like the UMC FY02 Compact to be on a campus enrollment plan with more focused programs and curriculum.

The Faculty Assembly is off to a good start in its initial year, and their leadership has worked closely with the vice chancellors in developing a response to the Crookston Study and Review Committee Report.  It notes over 50 activities--which are either under way or will be--to strengthen UMC.  Two of the initial activities are the hiring of full-time directors of assessment and first year experience for spring semester.  Other activities include training on the University hiring and promotion and tenure policies and a judicious curriculum review.

I have posted the Crookston Review Plan, Chancellors FY01 Work Plan, 3 Pre-Compact Follow-up Memos, and Executive Committee minutes on my website http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~sargeant/.   Any suggestions, just let me know.

We have much to be thankful for and enough challenges to keep us going.  My thanks to all of you.
--Don Sargeant, Chancellor

Data Report Training
I will be offering training on Thursday, January 4, for the U’s management reporting website. Two one-hour sessions, one at 10 a.m. and one at 2 p.m., will be held in Dowell 103.  The reports are built from PeopleSoft data.  There are many “canned” reports available at this site and new reports are being developed.  There are many useful student records reports (i.e. Class Lists, Student Summary, Magic Numbers, and etc).  If you have not used this application, this would be a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with navigating and extracting data from this site.  You can bring your computer, but it’s not required.
--Jeff Sperling, Enterprise Systems Coordinator

NSIC Rate at the Four Points SheratonNSIC Logo
As of January 1, 2001, the Four Points Sheraton in Minneapolis will offer anyone associated with the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) a special $68 rate. The offer is a result of an idea generated by the Board of Directors during our fall meetings. The Four Points Sheraton was very open to the idea, but wanted to wait until January 1 to "kick-off" the special rate.

The rate is available to anyone associated with your institution (faculty, coaches, etc.) that needs to stay in the Twin Cities.  The rate is available for any day during the week.  However, RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE PRIOR TO THE HOTEL BEING AT 90 PERCENT OCCUPANCY.  If the hotel is at 90 percent occupancy, they will offer the best rate available. Individuals are not obligated to stay at the hotel if they do not receive the $68 rate.  I was told by the Four Points Sheraton that the $68 rate should be available if reservations are made at least 2-3 weeks in advance.  The reservations number(s) for the Four Points Sheraton are (612) 331-1900 or 1-800-777-3277.

The Four Points Sheraton will be sending some fliers announcing the special rate.  I will forward a copy to your institution so that it can be distributed.
--Mike Lockrem, NSIC Commissioner
