U of M Policy Changes
U of M faculty and staff can view information on the latest policy changes on the web by going to:

http://www.fpd.finop.umn.edu/groups/ppd/documents/main/new.cfm

One of the new proposed policy changes has to do with respect for privacy.  There are very few secrets anymore.  Especially as we conduct more and more of our daily activities online.  To help protect the privacy of individuals that visit University web sites, the University has developed a new proposed policy, Collecting Information From Visitors To University Web Sites (Online Privacy).

http://process.umn.edu/groups/ppd/documents/policy/online_privacy.cfm

The policy establishes standards for informing visitors whether and when the University collects information electronically from the WWW.  The policy includes standard privacy statements and also contains guidelines for units that would rather establish customized statements.

This policy, which is owned by OIT, will be discussed at the Maintaining the Edge Conference on January 24.  (http://process.umn.edu/conferences/jan2001)  The seminar will provide a good way to find out more information about the topic and plan how your unit can assist in making privacy an important issue.

http://process.umn.edu/conferences/jan2001/agenda.htm#onlineprivacy

An afternoon session from 1:15 - 2:15 will provide an opportunity for discussion and feedback.  There is plenty of time to make your plans since the policy is not effective until September 1, 2001. A special thanks to the committee that has been developing this policy over the last four months.

Call for Entries for Carlson School Business Plan Competition/Gopher the Gold Header
Entrepreneurs and visionaries at the University of Minnesota have an opportunity to turn their business ideas into reality through the Fourth Annual “Gopher the Gold” University of Minnesota Business Plan Competition.

Gopher the Gold will officially begin January 18, with $45,000 in equity and services at stake for the three winners.  The business plan competition, hosted annually by the Carlson School of Management, is designed to encourage the growth of innovative business ideas and entrepreneurial ventures at the university and in the local business community.

The winner of the Gopher the Gold competition will receive $15,000 in equity and $15,000 in professional services. Second place gets combined equity and services totaling $12,500, and third place receives $2,500.  An additional prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the team that submits the best executive summary one month before the plan deadline.

Information sessions will be held on campus in the weeks following Gopher the Gold's January 18 kickoff.  The deadline for the executive summary contest is March 2, and the deadline for the submission of completed business plans is April 3.  Each participating team must have a University of Minnesota student, staff or faculty member as a major partner.

Competing teams work closely with mentors from the entrepreneurial and venture capital communities.  The mentors help guide the development of a team's plan and then continue working with the team to help ensure the future success of their idea.

"The competition is a tremendous business and learning opportunity," says Doug Johnson, co-director of the Carlson School of Management's Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.  "Participants gain first-hand knowledge of business plan development and business formation processes.  They also interact with key members of the entrepreneurial community. This learning and support are invaluable to anyone looking to start a new company."

Last year, 22 business plans were entered into the competition.  The winner was Introspective Ideas, Inc., a medical device company developed by a Carlson School MBA student and two university mechanical engineering students.

For more information about the business plan competition, visit www.gopherthegold.org or call (612) 624-6205.
