Students
at Lobby Days
February 14, 20
As the President of the
UMC Student Association, I would like to ask faculty and staff for
their help to support and encourage this year’s lobby days efforts.
As you know, Gov. Ventura has proposed a slim budget that will
affect everyone in the U of M system.
I would like to ask that you consider allowing students to have
the opportunity to make up any work that they might miss on the
scheduled lobby days (February 14 and 20).
I feel that it is a very valuable experience and that it will
be a learning opportunity that is not easily taught in a classroom.
Please take this into consideration and feel free to contact me
if you would like to discuss this further.
Thank you for your time. Note:
I will provide a list of all the students that are attending if
requested.
Also, check out the
legislative info page at http://www.umcrookston.edu/lobby.htm.
Sincerely,
--Shane Roers, President,
University of Minnesota, Crookston Student Association
Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program
Application materials
for UROP projects to be conducted between June 18, 2001 to June 15,
2001, are now available in the Academic Affairs Office.
Funding for a limited number of Intersession projects is also
available (Intersession project dates are May 21 to June 30, 2001).
The hourly rate to use in determining the stipend is $10.84.
The maximum award is $1,700 (stipend up to $1,400 and expense
allowance up to $300).
Completed
applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30
p.m. on March 5, 2001 (late applications will not be accepted).
UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for
research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership
with a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience
of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and
implementation of a project. It
encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests
outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special
projects. UROP
applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the
educational benefit to the student.
Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have
been funded are on reserve in the library.
For more information
on UROP, check out http://www.umcrookston.edu/UMCadmin/AcademicAff/UROP/Index.htm

“Five
Fundamentals of Successful Wealth Accumulation,”
facilitated by Paul Leighton representing Minnesota Life.
This workshop covers the basics you need to know to
achieve your financial goals. The five time-tested fundaments are: establishing a “safety net” of cash and insurance;

U
of M Grant Writing Seminar March 6-7
The Office of the
Executive Vice President and Provost invites you to attend a 1.5-day
grant-writing program designed for senior faculty members and P&A
staff who are currently serving or previously served as a principal
investigator for a grant. This seminar, entitled "Write Winning Grants" will
be held in Room 42 Earle Brown Center, St. Paul Campus on Tuesday,
March 6, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, March 7, 8:30 a.m. to
12:00 noon.
Stephen W. Russell,
D.V.M., Ph.D., an experienced academician, grant manager, and
grant-reviewer will lead the seminar.
He has held an endowed research chair at the University of
Kansas, has served as a research director and department chair, and
co-founded the "Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, L.L.C"
through which this workshop is offered.
Those attending the
seminar would learn, among other things, the fundamental principles of
grant-writing, tips on how to write for reviewers, how to develop a
fundable idea for a grant application, how to identify the most
applicable sources of funding for an idea, how to assess your
competition and to benefit from their ideas, how to use the Internet
to advantage, and how best to stress innovation, novelty and impact in
the way an application is written.
Although this seminar
addresses both conceptual and practical aspects, it emphasizes idea
development and is particularly applicable to the life sciences and
engineering. The second morning of the seminar is spent intensively
interacting with participants, building on the previous day's program,
the presenters' experience, and the needs of the attendees.
There is no charge
for this seminar; however, space is limited to 100 participants and
advance registration is requested no later than February 28 by calling
612-626-9177 leaving your name, title, and department or by email to b-hart@umn.edu.
This seminar is being
sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost,
the Graduate School, the Agricultural Experiment Station, the College
of Veterinary Medicine and the Northrup King Development Program of
the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics.

J. Jones, U of M Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Personnel
Blood
Drive Successful
A huge thank you to
those students, staff, and faculty who helped make our most recent
blood drive such a tremendous success.
Of the 64 people who tried to donate, 51 units were obtained.
This was UMC’s most successful drive ever!!
On behalf of those people whose lives have been saved and
United Blood Services, a very sincere “thank you.”
