Maroon
and Gold Week February 19-24
UMC will help observe
the U of M’s Founders Week by hosting Maroon and Gold Week here on
campus. Highlights
include a “Regal the Golden Eagle” coloring contest in local
elementary schools; best dressed “maroon and gold pride” contests
for students, faculty, and staff; free community pancake breakfast;
student rally for support of U of M budget request; and encouragement
of people in Crookston and surrounding communities to wear maroon and
gold on Friday, February 23.

On Friday, February 23, faculty and staff are challenged to see who shows the most U of M pride
through the way they dress. Winners
will be selected that afternoon at a special UMC gathering at 3 p.m.
in Brown Dining Room, rooms A and B.
Everyone is welcome. The top three individuals reflecting the
most Maroon and Gold Pride (as judged by UMC students) will be awarded

From
President Yudof
Friday,
February 23, is the first-ever statewide Maroon and Gold Day. On this
day, Minnesotans at the U and throughout the state are being asked to
wear Maroon and Gold colors to celebrate our 150th birthday. Alumni chapters in
Fergus Falls, Willmar, Rochester, and many other communities will hold
special Maroon and Gold Day events, as will companies such as General
Mills, which will also encourage their employees to wear the U's
colors. The coordinate campus communities of Crookston, Duluth, and
Morris, and the Rochester branch are also celebrating in grand style.
The
statewide Maroon and Gold Day is part of our Founders Week, February
18 through February 25. As you may know, February 25, 2001 marks the 150th
anniversary of the founding of our University.
In February of 1851 the territorial legislature had little
money, no buildings, no faculty, and very few students to begin a
university. But they had a vision. A
vision of Minnesota as a center of learning and culture, research and
discovery. And so they
took the first step on February 25, 1851, signing a charter that
created the University of Minnesota.
Imagine what those visionary leaders would think if they could
see the University today!
Many
activities are planned to celebrate Maroon and Gold Day across the
state of Minnesota. For example, special prizes will be awarded to the
best-dressed UMC faculty and staff who promote the most "Maroon
and Gold" pride (as judged by UMC students) on Friday, February
23. Winners will be
announced later that afternoon at a special UMC gathering at 3 p.m. in
Brown Dining Room. And in Morris, Mayor Carol Wilcox will sign a
proclamation declaring the day as Maroon and Gold Day.
Free Sesquicentennial calendars, posters, and UMM Founders Day
pencils will be given away in the UMM student center to campus folks
wearing University colors.
These
are just a few ways that people throughout the state are showing their
Maroon and Gold pride. Don't
forget: wear maroon and gold next Friday, and join in this statewide
celebration.

MPR
Features U of M, UMC
Minnesota
Public Radio (MPR) has done a special online exposé called The
Universal U. The
exposé includes several features about the many faces of the
University of Minnesota. It
is available online at http://news.mpr.org/programs/specials/u/.
Within that exposé, MPR’s Bob Reha has done a special
feature on the Crookston Campus:
http://news.mpr.org/programs/specials/u/rehab_crookston/index.shtml.
Also, on Thursday,
February 22, MPR will broadcast a special two-hour live town meeting
noon to 2 p.m. from the Ted Mann Theater on the West Bank, Twin Cities Campus.
During the town meeting participants will discuss what
the vision for the U is and how to best achieve it.
Several people from
UMC (group travel coordinated by Judy Neppel and Richard Nelson) have
been invited to be in the audience with opportunity to possibly engage
in the dialogue. Along
with that meeting, MPR has set up an online forum at http://news.mpr.org/programs/specials/u/forumbegin.shtml.
That forum is now open to the public for participation, and the forum
will remain open until at least February 23.
According to MPR, the
best ideas will be posted on MPR's newsroom web site and later
packaged and sent to key policy makers and opinion leaders. What you
say can make a difference.

Northwest
Regional Sustainable Development Partnership Seeks Ideas
The
Northwest Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (NWRSDP) has
developed a process for citizens, communities, institutions and
agencies to submit ideas for consideration.
The Partnership, funded by the Minnesota
legislature, is a new venture for the region.
It is a joint effort to connect the citizens of Northwest
Minnesota with the University of Minnesota.
The goal is to enhance the social, economic, and environmental
well-being of the region through citizen-led research, education, and
outreach programs. The
University of Minnesota, Crookston is lending support to the program
at the regional level.
Linda Kingery, the Executive Director
of the NWRSDP, is asking citizens of the region for ideas for specific
projects. The Partnership
encourages and supports ideas that:
focus on northwest Minnesota and provide regional benefits;
address regional needs associated with agriculture, natural resources
or tourism; improve the local economy; embody the principles of
sustainable development; seek a balance among environmental, economic
and community priorities; involve citizens, businesses, communities,
organizations, public agencies and University of Minnesota faculty and
students; and have a clear public purpose so the results will be
useful to others in northwest Minnesota.
Counties served by the NWRSDP include Clay, Kittson, Lake of
the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake,
Roseau, and Wilkin.
For
more information on how you can submit ideas or requests to the NWRSDP,
please contact Linda Kingery at 701-993-8663 or via e-mail at lkingery@polarcomm.com.

Procedures
for Large Mailings at UMC Post Office
The
UMC Post Office has been receiving more mass mailings than ever.
We will gladly process all of them as they arrive, but we would
like to remind everyone about the rules and regulations regarding
these items:
- In order to receive a reduced rate of
postage, each mailing must have at least 200 pieces, all the same
size and weight. Canadian mail cannot be used as part of the
count.
- Mail must be in zip code order within
the box or within the rubber band.
(This can be done very easily, as you place the address
labels on the items. When the zip code changes, just put a rubber band around
the items, even if that makes several small packs.)
- Envelopes can be either sealed or left
unsealed.
- Brochures or flyers that are being
mailed as individual items must be closed by either stickers or
tape, never staples.
- Brochures or flyers must be on heavy
paper (no less than 70# paper). For
further information contact Patti - 8402 or Sue – 8401. Lightweight paper gets caught in the postage machine and
gets mutilated.
If
you know you are going to be doing a large mailing, please call for
any assistance or questions, John - 8429 or stop by the window from 1
to 3 p.m. Thank you.

Svedarsky
Presents 2001 Paur Wildlife Lecture at UND
UMC Professor of Natural
Resources Dan Svedarsky presented the 2001 Glenn Alan Paur Memorial
Lecture at the University of North Dakota (UND) on Thursday, February
15, 2001. Svedarsky’s
lecture was entitled “Resource management in the new millennium; The
future ain’t what it used to be.”
On Friday, February 16, Svedarsky presented a more
technically-oriented seminar to UND faculty and students entitled,
“The national status and management of the greater prairie
chicken.”
The annual Paur
Memorial Lecture was initiated in 1979 to honor Glenn Paur, an
outstanding wildlife student at UND.
The lecture features a prominent wildlife scientist and is part
of the ceremony where the Glenn Paur Award is presented to an
outstanding UND wildlife student—the student who best exemplifies
the qualities of Paur. Paur
was tragically killed in his first job and showed strong promise of
substantial contribution to his chosen field of wildlife biology.
