On Thursday, February 22, the Student Service Fees Committee met and reviewed proposals for the 2001-02 Student Service Fees.  As in the past years, any club or organization that was proposing an increase in the fee was required to bring their justification to the committee meeting.

I invite all students, faculty, and staff to review the proposed student service fees.  The fee proposals will also be an agenda item at the Student Association meeting on Monday, February 26, at 5:30 p.m. in Knutson A&B.

Here is the link to the fee proposals:
http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~dmcclear/StudentFees/index.htm

Click on Student Fee Proposal for the 2001-02 year to view the current proposals.  To get more information on any of the proposed rate increases, click on the “fee increase $$ / %” column, and you should find a summary of the proposal and justification for the increase.  Also you will find a link to the Student Service Fee committee members.

Students may send their comments on the fee proposals to my attention, or to any of the committee members.  After the presentation to the Student Forum, the committee will be meeting on Tuesday, February 27, to finalize the recommendations to the Chancellor, so please send your comments on as soon as possible.  Any questions, please let me know.

Classrooms of the Future Conference
The Office of Academic Affairs at UMC would certainly support the costs of anyone wanting to present at the Classrooms of the Future Conference, May 23, at the University of St. Thomas in the Twin Cities.  It would be a good opportunity to showcase the work we are doing here in Crookston.   For more information, visit: http://www.iss.stthomas.edu/symposia/.  Last year Bill Peterson attended from UMC.

Student Lobby Day a Great Success
Lobby DayThe largest group of UMC students ever—148—traveled to the Capitol in St. Paul on Tuesday, February 20 to take part in the U’s Student Lobby Day.  Even Regal the UMC Golden Eagle mascot took part.  The students gathered again on Thurssday, February 22, along with other students, faculty, and staff for a follow up rally in UMC’s Brown Dining Room.  Lobby Day attendees indicated they were encouraged by their meetings with individual legislators but also vowed to keep actively supporting efforts asking the MN Legislature for increased funding for the U.  Shane Roers and Kevin Poppel deserve a great deal of credit for mobilizing the UMC student body.  To see photos, go to http://www.umcrookston.edu/lobby.htm.

FYI Drug Recall
With the cold and flu season currently underway, I thought it would be good to remind you about a drug recall from November of 2000.  As of November 7, 2000, the FDA asked for a voluntary drug recall of all products containing Phenylpropanolamine (PPA).  This medication has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain) among women ages 18-49.  Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine.

Please check out the following web site for more information.
http://my.webmd.com/content/article/1728.63462

According to the FDA, consumers should not panic, but check each product’s label for PPA.  A safer alternative to PPA would be pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), which is similar to PPA, but safer.  If unsure about a specific product, consumers can also call the FDA at 1-888-INFO-FDA or (301) 827-4570 to get answers to specific questions.

UMC Student Health has never carried any medications that contain PPA.

UROP LogoUndergraduate Research Opportunities Program
Application materials for UROP projects to be conducted between June 18, 2001 to June 15, 2001, are now available in the Academic Affairs Office.  Funding for a limited number of Intersession projects is also available (Intersession project dates are May 21 to June 30, 2001).  The hourly rate to use in determining the stipend is $10.84.  The maximum award is $1,700 (stipend up to $1,400 and expense allowance up to $300).

Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on March 5, 2001 (late applications will not be accepted).  UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.  UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project.  It encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects.  UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student.  Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

For more information on UROP, check out http://www.umcrookston.edu/UMCadmin/AcademicAff/UROP/Index.htm
