UMC Featured in Wall Street Journal
Wall Street Journal Header
The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) and its ubiquitous computing environment are the focus of a feature in the Monday, March 12, 2001, edition of the Wall Street Journal.  The feature, entitled “A Campus Connected,” is written by Wall Street Journal staff reporter Evan Ramstad and is part of a special section focusing on technology, e-commerce, and the Internet’s revolutionary impact on education.  In an introductory headline, the reporter asks, “
What will college look like in the not-so-distant future? Crookston, Minn., provides an early glimpse.”

The article provides examples of how faculty members have incorporated computer and Web-based technology into their courses and examples of how students use the UMC-issued notebook computers for learning and entertainment.   The article goes on to trace the history of UMC’s technology initiatives, and the benefits and challenges the college’s unique learning environment are discussed.

Air Force ROTC Lunch March 22
We would like to invite faculty and staff to lunch and an Air Force ROTC presentation provided by Captain Deb Bibeau on Thursday, March 22, in Room A of Brown Dining Hall.  Please alert the cashier that you will be dining with the Air Force ROTC.

The opportunities our students have with the Air Force ROTC program are wonderful, and there has been some new leadership in the program.  So please mark it on your calendar and join us and learn more about them.  If you were unaware, we will also be having our first ROTC student graduating this spring and being commissioned.  If you have any questions please let me know.
--Brian Steenerson, Admissions & Financial Aid Representative

Reports Available on the Web
At a recent meeting in the Twin Cities, the Information Management Systems department gave a demonstration regarding reports that are available on the web.  The site can be accessed at www.umreports.umn.edu; also the site has had a recent interface upgrade, so please take a look.  Use your x.500 user account and password to access.

Shelly Diers from IMS gave the demonstration.  The reports that Shelly demonstrated are listed below along with a short description and a how-to navigate.  If you have specific questions about this site I may be able to help you or I can refer you to another source.  You do not need to have access to PeopleSoft to use the reports, however, some of the reports contain “private data” and special access is required to view the data.

Note from Shelly:  The primary goal of IMS is to provide reporting solutions to assist staff in doing their jobs.  IMS has been working intensively the past few months with OTR and admissions to improve existing reports and to create new ones.  If you plan to print any reports it’s recommended to print in landscape.

POETS Society Meets Again March 22
To those interested in second gathering, the POETS Society, as it is referred to, will meet again on Thursday, March 22.  Due to many basketball tournament games and activities, the group had to delay its earlier scheduled meeting.  Please join us if you would like to relax and visit with colleagues, current and past.   At our first meeting, we had a wonderful taste of a true poet’s work, and with encouragement, I am sure Mr. Miller would share with us again a couple of his renderings (although those attending are not required to recite poetry).  Attendance is not taken, classroom work is not required, and the homework is non-existent.  Remember; join us Thursday, March 22, for some socializing at 5 p.m. at the Northland Inn.
--Curt Almlie and Don Cavalier, Co-chairs, POETS Society
