University of Minnesota History Books
The University has published a history text titled The University of Minnesota 1945-2000.  It is authored by Stanford Lehmberg and Ann M. Pflaum.  It is a beautiful and remarkable recounting of the combination of land grant mission and research focus of the University.  It describes the challenges, triumphs, and accomplishments of the University for the past 55 years.  You may have a personal copy by picking one up at the Library.  UMC is featured and you will find it very interesting reading.

Global Seminars - Faculty Information
The Global Campus offers a wide variety of study abroad opportunities that address the needs of many students.  In order to reach even more students, offerings have been expanded to include Global Seminars - short-term, faculty-led programs that are designed around a particular theme or topic, and may be specific to one discipline or are cross-disciplinary.  These programs provide a first experience abroad, or a capstone experience for graduating seniors who have not been able to study abroad during their undergraduate studies.

Faculty members who lead Global Seminars work closely with a small group of students in an overseas setting and share the positive experiences that students gain from such a program.  Faculty have the opportunity to build on or develop new contacts on-site, and perhaps collaborate on education and research topics of mutual interest.  Faculty receive a salary stipend plus expenses.

If you are interested in teaching a Global Seminar, visit the website at
http://www.umabroad.umn.edu/gcPrograms/Sponsored/GlobalSeminars/GSFrame.html and click on "Faculty Information" in the left-hand column.  Also contact Sophie Gladding, Global Seminars Program Director, at 626-0597 for more information.

There will be information meetings for faculty members interested in leading Global Seminars and other faculty-led, short-term study abroad opportunities on each of the three Twin Cities campuses.

The meetings will be held:

ST. PAUL CAMPUS - Monday, April 2 in 22 McNeal Hall, 3:30-4:30
WEST BANK CAMPUS - Tuesday, April 3 in 289 Humphrey Hall, 3:30-4:30
EAST BANK CAMPUS - Wednesday, April 4 in 433 Johnston Hall, 3:30-4:30

Proposals for programs are due on May 1, 2001 for Winter Break 2001 programs and May 2002 Intersession programs.

If you have any questions about Global Seminars, please feel free to contact me. E-mail: gladd001@umn.edu  Phone: 612-626-0597

Equine Program Receives Special FFA Honor
FFA Region 1 has chosen to recognize the UMC Equine Industries Management Program with its Honorary Region 1 Degree in recognition of the work the faculty and students in that program have done hosting Ag Activities Day and the Regional FFA Horse Judging Contests.  Melissa Hower-Moritz and Dawn Sherwood accepted the honor at the group’s awards banquet on Monday, March 26, at Ada High School.  Melissa Hower-Moritz commented, “I was extremely grateful that when they talked about why the program received the award, they talked about all of the hard work that the UMC students do to help host the judging contests, etc.  This award is for the program, and [students] are the most important component of the equine program!”  The award plaque will be displayed in the trophy case in the foyer of UTOC.
