Grant Writing Seminar April 5-6
On Thursday, April 5, and Friday, April 6, Dr. Esam E. El-Fakahany, the Assistant Vice President for Research and Associate Dean of the Graduate School at the Twin Cities campus, will be visiting UMC to present a short grant writing workshop.  Anyone who has written or is considering writing a grant to fund scholarly interests, in particular a Grant-in-Aid, would find this session useful.

Selected items from the itinerary follow (a full itinerary is available at http://kipper.crk.umn.edu/research/grants/):

Thursday, April 5, 2:30 p.m., Sahlstrom Conference Room A/B:
"Writing fundable grant proposals; secrets of a veteran".  Esam El-Fakahany will discuss various tips on how to write different sections of a grant proposal and what makes reviewers enthusiastic.

Friday, April 6, Noon, Sahlstrom Conference Room A/B:
An open question and answer session to address specific situations that have been encountered or specific points of interest or needs.

Dr. El-Fakahany writes:  “As for my background, I have had experience and good fortune in writing funded grant proposals for the past two decades without interruption in funding.  I have also served on numerous grant review panels of federal agencies and foundations.  This experience has been invaluable in getting an insider's view of the review process.  I very much enjoy sharing the secrets of the trade with faculty and students and see that as a valuable contribution to progress of scholarship in our university.”

There will also be ample opportunity for anyone to meet privately with Esam.  Feel free to contact me with a suitable time.

Please join us.
--David DeMuth, Assistant Professor of Physics and Math

Recently you received a postcard-type announcement of a special conference on teaching and learning called,  "Opening the door- sharing the craft of teaching."  This one-day session is scheduled for Monday, April 23, at the beautiful McNamara Alumni Center on the Minneapolis campus.  This is a special place and it makes you feel proud to be associated with the U of Minnesota.  The conference is designed to be very personal and interactive.  The hosts of this conference are the All-University Academy of Distinguished Teachers, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the U of M Alumni Association.  It is also part of President Yudof's Sesquicentennial Conference Series.  Capping off the day at 3:30 will be the presentation of the 2001 Morse-Alumni Teaching Awards.

There is no registration fee, and lunch is provided, but advanced registration is required.  There are some rooms available for out-state campus attendees at the University Radisson, but these need to be reserved as part of the online registration.  For more information and to register, see http://www1.umn.edu/ohr/teachlearn/adt/conf.html.  Our own Dan Lim and Diane Moen will be among the list of presenters.

If you're really into the learning process, you'll love this program! You will hear from some of the University's finest.  Give me a call if you have any questions.

Weekly Bulletin Survey Results
The University Relations Office wishes to thank everyone who participated in the survey for the UMC Weekly Bulletin.  From our sampling that represented nearly 40% of our distribution list, we ascertained some basic information to give us direction for the future of the UMC Weekly Bulletin.

Some facts we found are as follows:

  1. 96% of our distribution list sampling read the UMC Weekly Bulletin.
  2. 80% of our sampling sees it as timely, useful and important.  17% were neutral.
  3. Nearly 60% preferred it on line.

Keeping in sync with our reputation as an institution of higher education with high technology as its forte, we will continue to publish the UMC Weekly Bulletin electronically.  However, we encourage departments where there is a demand for hard copy to please print the Bulletin from the website link provided each week for those who request it be delivered in that manner.

Finally, the University Relations Department wishes to thank Sue Dwyer and Andrew Svec, whose constant efforts to produce the best possible UMC Weekly Bulletin is never ending.  It is appreciated as indicated by numerous comments provided in the survey.  Comments, suggestions, news items, and/or questions can be addressed to Sue, Andrew, or Curt in the University Relations Office.

A Gentle Reminder
Faculty and staff who use the classroom projection units are gently reminded to please turn off the projection unit when they leave the room after classes. Leaving the projection units turned on all the time greatly reduces the life of the bulbs. Bulbs cost anywhere from $300-$500 depending on the projection unit model.

Request for Recurring News Items and Updates
In response to comments from the UMC Weekly Bulletin survey, we would like to remind the campus community that anyone may submit information to the Weekly Bulletin.  We will attempt to accommodate info updates and event notices from any department or individual.  If a department or unit would like to share updates on a recurring basis under a special departmental headline, we will also try to accommodate.

In addition, we are establishing a section called “This Week’s Special Dates.”  Faculty and staff are encouraged to share well wishes for birthdays, anniversaries, births, etc. with the rest of the campus.  Please send items for the bulletin via e-mail to Andrew Svec at asvec@mail.crk.umn.edu and/or Sue Dwyer at sdwyer@mail.crk.umn.edu. Thanks.
