Community Service Award Nominations Due April 16
The Community Service Award Committee is pleased to announce the third annual Community Service Award to honor community outreach and community service activities of faculty, staff and members of the greater University community.  This award recognizes outstanding contributions and accomplishments of faculty, staff or community members who have devoted their time and talent to make substantial enduring contributions to the external community and to improve public life and the well being of society.  Such contributions and accomplishments must result in long-term and lasting changes for the public good and demonstrate an unusual commitment to the University and greater community.  Awards are not intended to recognize service provided to a professional association or to recognize other service normally seen as part of their responsibility as an employee of the University of Minnesota.

One Community Service Award is given each year for the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus.  Recognition of this award and a $500 scholarship is given in the name of the award winner.  All faculty and staff are eligible to receive this award.

Any person or group may make a nomination.  Please submit the name or names of individuals along with a brief statement as to why these persons are worthy of receiving the award by April 16, 2001.  Nominations can be submitted to the Community Service award Committee, c/o Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, 106 Bede Hall or email Pam at pholsing@mail.crk.umn.edu.

Past award winners are Nancy Capistran and Carol Larson.  The committee encourages your nominations for the Community Service Award to help recognize and honor our many important contributions to community outreach and community service.  Thank you.

University of Minnesota, CrookstonNinety-nine Great Things about UMC
Again I am requesting your assistance in compiling statements of what 99 great things about UMC can we think of that are important to our University.
Three years ago, Southwest State at Marshall developed a flyer that stated ninety-nine great things about SWSU.  I thought it was an interesting and fun idea.  I think we could also develop a similar type of informative piece.  However, it would be most helpful if any or all of you could send one or two things that you think would qualify as a great thing at UMC.

Please send your ideas to me at calmlie@mail.crk.umn.edu.  Thank you and I look forward to your response.  We reserve the right to edit.

First Year Experience LogoFirst Year Experience Update
The FYE Project Team has assigned a work group to look specifically at first-year advising issues.  The work group has created a Pre-Advising Handbook to give to all incoming students prior to Academic Advisement & Registration.  The handbook promotes information that students need to know before they come to register such as the UMC course placement process, how to calculate GPA, adviser/advisee roles, and an explanation of campus resources.  Look for a copy of the pre-advising handbook at Academic Advisement & Registration.

Regents Policy on PI Eligibility (Sponsored Funds/Research)
A memo on the policy is listed below.  Please note that the required instruction was provided on our campus this year and most of our PI's have already attended the required training.
--Dean McCleary, UMC Vice Chancellor for Finance

Subject: Regents Policy on PI Eligibility

Beginning March 19,2001, PIs are required to complete appropriate instruction in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) before new funds from external grants or contracts, as well as from the Graduate School, are released for spending.  This educational requirement is mandated by

Regents Policy, "PI Eligibility for Use of Sponsored Funds."  The policy applies to all new AND non-competing awards.  It also applies to Co-PIs on an award.

The breadth of the required education depends upon the nature of the funded research:

All PIs must attend RCR, Part 2, which covers recent University policies and procedures concerning Fiscal Responsibility, Intellectual Property and Conflict of Interest.

PIs who did not attend a workshop on RCR at the University of Minnesota in the past 6 years, must also attend at least one additional session, RCR, Part 1.  Topics covered in this session are Social Responsibility, Authorship, Peer Review and Data Management.

If the project involves human research subjects, animal research subjects, or environmental health hazards, the PI must also attend an additional session for each relevant topic.  To satisfy the basic educational requirement for protecting human subjects in research, the PI may read material on the web (see: www.ospa.umn.edu for web addresses) or attend a class.  Introductory training sessions offered through the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Environmental Health and Safety are currently acceptable for meeting the educational requirements in these areas.

I commend those of you have already met the educational requirement.  Please log-on to the website http://nirvana.ospa.umn.edu/rcr using your University Internet ID and password to view a summary of your instructional record.  If there is an omission in this record, please contact your college administrator (see list below).

For those of you who still need to complete the educational requirement, the web site www.research.umn.edu/training lists the schedule of classes and procedures for registration.
--Christine Maziar, VP for Research and Dean of the Graduate School
