Tradition Begins with UAcademic Advisement & Registration
I would encourage you to mark your calendar if you haven't already for Academic Advisement & Registration.  It is scheduled for May 10, 11, 14 and 15.  We are excited to see these students wanting to continue the tradition at UMC, and we want you to be a part of their day.

Schedule (pdf version)

The schedule for each day is the same.  They will be checking in at the Atrium from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.  In the past we have held the Student Success Fair outside Morsels, but this year we will be holding the fair in Brown Dining Hall.  That way we won't have to rush students through the tables to get to the Welcome.  I would like all those participating in the fair to please show up and be ready at their table by 8:15 a.m.  Those involved are: Financial Aid, Academic Assistance Center, Athletics, Bookstore, Children's Center, Counseling & Career Services, Dining Services, Disability Services, Health Services, Housing, Multicultural/International, Music & Theater, First Year Experience, Student Activities/Service Learning, Student Support Services, and Publicity Information.

The Welcome is from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., and if you are available to come up to Brown Dining Hall at that time, we would like to introduce you to the students and their families so they can start to get to know our faculty and staff.

The Center Meetings will be from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., and advising will begin after that with web registration to follow.  Here is where the center meetings will be held:

CENTER LOCATION
Center for Agriculture
& Natural Resources
Brown Dining Hall
Center for Business
& Technology
Dowell Hall 212
Center for Health
& Human Services
Dowell Hall 109
Center for Learning Foundations Dowell Hall 202

Academic advising will be held in Dowell Hall 204 and 205.  Tables will be marked for each program.  I encourage you to bring your computer to the room so you can check availability of classes on the web but we will also have a course listing as well.  Web registration will be right across the hall in Dowell Hall 207.  Please have preliminary schedules put together before coming to web registration.  We do not want to tie up a computer trying to find classes and things when we have other students waiting to register.

While students are advising and registering we will again be providing a Parent Orientation in Youngquist Auditorium.

I want to thank you in advance for participating in these registration days because it truly means a lot to the students.  If you have any questions, please let me know.
--Brian Steenerson, Assistant Director of Admissions/Transfer Specialist

Bookstore’s Summer Hours
For the Summer, the UMC Bookstore will be open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or by appointment.   I will be here from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.  However, the Bookstore may be closed other than from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as I may be at a meeting.  The Bookstore is open additional hours for various summer camps.  Regular hours resume August 17, 2001.  Textbook questions may be answered at our web site at http://bookstore.crk.umn.edu. Have a good summer!

Faculty and Staff Accolades

Deanna PatenaudeDeanna Patenaude’s proposal for a Lifetime of Learning Grant has been funded through the Corporation for National Service Programs of National Significance. This was a highly competitive grant with $201,000 available among ten states in the Northern Cluster.  There were eleven proposals from Minnesota alone.  The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at UMC will receive the full proposal amount of $19,088.  The best part is that this grant is a continuing annual grant.  Jan Hively of the U of M Vital Aging Initiative assisted Deanna in writing the proposal.

Michelle ChristophersonMichelle Christopherson, program associate in the Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources, has been selected as one of 24 participants for the newly created University of Minnesota President’s Emerging Leaders program to begin July 2001.  Over twelve months this group will take part in a series of programs aimed at fostering a broad perspective of the University as an enterprise as well as promoting skill development that enhances leadership effectiveness.  The program will be offered to a new cohort each year and will provide a structured but flexible development opportunity for selected high potential P & A, Civil Service, and Bargaining Unit staff to further prepare themselves to provide significant leadership at the University.

UMC Students Present Rhetoric Papers
Two UMC students presented their research papers at the 2001 Red River Student Communication Conference, held April 27 on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo.  The theme of the conference this year was “Communication and Social Advocacy.”

Elizabeth “Liz” Tollefson presented "Examining a Hospice Mission Statement” and Carrie Tollefson presented "Burke and Aristotle in a Robert Frost Poem."  The two presented in the category “Studies in Rhetorical and Communication Theory and Criticism.”  Both students are majoring in scientific and technical communication at UMC.  An interesting twist is that the students are mother, Liz, and daughter, Carrie, of Crookston.

Being asked to present at the conference is an honor, as presenters had to submit their papers to a review board.  Students from regional universities such as Concordia College, University of South Dakota, Valley City State University, and NDSU also attended and presented papers.

Crops Team Places at National Competition
The UMC Crops Judging Team ranked in the top two in many categories at the National Invitational Collegiate Crops Contest, held April 20 at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  The team consisted of Martin Hochhalter, Kevin Jacobson, Charlie Stein, and Justin Knott.

The team took home the following honors:  first place in the Agronomic Quiz; second place in Crop and Weed Identification; second place in Lab Practical (includes judging seed samples and identifying insects, diseases, and machinery); and second place in Math Practical (includes calculations for acreage and chemical and fertilizer application rates).  The team finished second overall nationally after facing competitors from Kansas State University, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Northwest Missouri State, and Cal Poly Pomona, among others.

Sesquicentennial Finale
We're writing to give you advance notice about the grand finale of our sesquicentennial celebration, Friday, June 29.  Hold that date on your calendar and plan to join us for a gala evening, highlighted by a Minnesota Orchestra performance in Northrop Memorial Auditorium.  A dinner in the McNamara Alumni Center, University of Minnesota Gateway, begins the evening. The year-long celebration concludes with a fireworks extravaganza over Northrop mall.  We hope you and your family will consider joining us for some or all of these events.  Your presence will help make this a night to remember.  Watch for your invitation in campus mail in the coming weeks.

The University of Minnesota Alumni Association is sponsoring this evening as its Annual Celebration.  For tickets call Northrop Ticket Office at 612-624-2345.  Prices are $40 for the show and $55 for the show and dinner.  (University of Minnesota Alumni Association members receive a $10 discount.)  For more information, visit <http://www.umaa.umn.edu/celebration2001>.

Faculty and Staff Celebration May 17
Wear your crazy hats!
Join us for the annual UMC Faculty and Staff Recognition Celebration, Thursday, May 17, from 3:00 to 5 p.m. at the Harris A Peterson Gazebo on the UMC Mall.  The event is a catered event with beverages furnished by the Development Office and the Northwest Educational Improvement Association.  All members of the UMC Community—UMC, NWROC, AURI, Extension, RSVP, Great Plains Inc., retirees and spouses—are invited to attend.  Everyone is encouraged to take part in the Wild and Crazy Hat Contest!  Awards presented will include Years of Service Awards, Retirement Awards, Distinguished Faculty and Staff Awards, and the Employee of the Semester Award.

2001 Legislative Session
The 2001 Minnesota legislative session will end on May 21.  Final decisions on funding for the University of Minnesota will be made in these last days.  We have less than 10 days to have our voices heard. Legislators need to hear from us now as a reminder of how important the University is to the state and as a measure of the statewide support for the University.

Current Funding Recommendations vs. U of M request $221.5 million

  • Governor $56.6 million
  • House of Representatives $87 million
  • Senate $153.3 million

You can help the University of Minnesota by doing the following three things during the next few days:

1. Contact your legislators once again and voice your support of the University's budget request. Your legislators will communicate to the House and Senate leadership and the conference committee members the support for the U they have in their districts. Thank them for making higher education a priority during this year of hard budget decisions and ask them to do all they can to continue to support the U's request. You can find your legislator's contact information by going to www.umn.edu/govrel  and selecting the District Finder button. Another option is to call 1-800-208-2072 and enter your 9-digit zip code. You will be put through to your legislators' offices so that you can speak directly to them and/or leave a message of support for the U.

2. The Higher Education Conference Committee is slated to begin meeting on Wednesday, May 9. If you know any of the Higher Education Committee members or live in their districts, please contact them and encourage them to support the Senate's position for University funding during conference committee. A list of the Conference committee members is on the backside of this alert.

3. Contact the Governor's office and voice your support for the University.  Call 1-800-208-2072 or send an e-mail at www.governor.state.mn.us

Thank you for lending your support of the University of Minnesota's grassroots efforts.
--Curt Almlie, University Relations
