The Education Committee of the Crookston Chamber of Commerce is extending an invitation to all UMC faculty and staff to attend a welcome back luncheon on Friday, September 1, at Minakwa Golf Course from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  (I understand it is a buffet lunch so people can come and go when convenient.)  Crookston public school staff have also been invited.  At approximately 12:15 new faculty and staff will be introduced.

Golf Opportunity
We are looking for about 20 golfers to golf in a two-man scramble against the Mayville State supporters in a tourney at Climax on Saturday, September 2.  It will begin at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start.  We will be done in sufficient time before the game kickoff.  It will cost $10 per player with the Top Five scores being taken to determine the winner.  The winning University will receive 3/4 of the winnings and the losing school will receive 1/4 of the winnings and will go to a scholarship at each institution.  Please contact me ASAP if you would like to participate.  Thank you.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
UROPUROP application material for projects to be conducted between January 1, 2001 to June 15, 2001 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.  The hourly rate to use in determining the stipend is $10.84.  The maximum award is $1,700 (stipend up to $1,400 and expense allowance up to $300).  Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on October 9, 2000 (late applications will not be accepted).  UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.  UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project.  It encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects.  UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student.  Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

RSVP Partners with Crookston Habitat for Humanity
On August 28 Darcy Koeckeritz began a one-year commitment as a VISTA volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Crookston Area Habitat for Humanity (CAHFH).  Darcy will be working on improving the infrastructure of CAHFH and will be working with RSVP to establish volunteer recruitment methods, recruit RSVP volunteers to assist in building homes, and other Habitat activities.

The Crookston Area Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to eliminate sub-standard housing and homelessness by working with people in need.  Using volunteer labor, donations and donated materials, Habitat builds or renovates simple, decent houses and sells them to low-income families at cost, with no profit or interest added.  To date, CAHFH has completed four homes, and hope to have three more completed this year.

Darcy, her husband, Al, and their daughter, Hattie, live in rural Crookston.  Darcy and Al have both been very active with Crookston’s Area Habitat for Humanity.  Darcy’s position as a VISTA will be a wonderful asset to both RSVP and CAHFH.

Olsonawski Named Interim Hockey Coach at UMC
UMC Athletic Director, Lon Boike announced Friday that Mark Olsonawski has been named the part-time interim head hockey coach at UMC.  He replaces Mark Huglen who resigned last month to pursue his academic career full-time at UMC.

Olsonawski was a three-time MVP with the Golden Eagle hockey team; he played in 95, 96 and 98.  According to Boike, “I think Mark will do a great job he is one of the most respected and decorated student-athletes that has played at UMC.  He has been involved with the program and we feel confident that he can step right in and provide stability and leadership for the hockey program.”  The position will officially open mid-September.

Call for Outstanding Achievement Nominations
As you know, the University is celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary through June 2001. It is a most fitting time to celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni and other individuals.

Earlier this year, President Yudof sent out a message suggesting that each department or unit consider submitting at least one nomination for the honorary degree and/or the Outstanding Achievement Award.  On behalf of the All-University Honors Committee I am writing this to invite your nominations.  For presentations to be made during the sesquicentennial year, it is preferred that materials be submitted prior to October 16, 2000, but no later than December 15, 2000.

If you have questions about the nomination process, I encourage you to call Vickie Courtney, University Senate (612-625-4805 or email courtney@mailbox.mail.umn.edu).  Summary requirements, citation samples, and the Awards and Recognition Procedures and Policy Handbook can be found on the Senate web page at the following URL http://www1.umn.edu/usenate/alluhonors/handbook.html

Aakre to Receive FFA Honorary American Degree
Paul AakrePaul Aakre, Assistant Professor of Agricultural Systems Management, has been nominated to receive the National FFA Organization’s Honorary American Degree.  The degree is the highest national honorary award presented by the FFA.  It recognizes those who greatly contribute to the advancement of agricultural education and who provide outstanding service to their local program and community.  Aakre was nominated by the Minnesota State Association.  The National FFA Board of Directors approved the nomination at their meeting in Indianapolis.  Pending final approval from the student FFA delegates, Aakre will receive the degree during the morning general session of the 73rd National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 27, 2000.

Stallman Resigns
Terry Stallman submitted his resignation, effective September 1, as the Director, Valley Technology Park and Rural Development Initiatives for UMC.  Terry provided excellent leadership in opening and managing the Park in its start-up stage this past year.  He has worked with numerous businesses throughout the region in starting and expanding their businesses.  The Valley Technology Park Board contracts with University of Minnesota, Crookston to provide management for the Park.  The position will be posted and filled as soon as possible.

During the past couple months Terry was able to secure a $400,000 grant from the Veden Foundation to UMC to support initiation of the Rural Economic Development degree emphasis.  The funds will be used to recruit students, develop courses, and for student internships in area communities.

Terry has accepted a Minnesota Economic Developer position with Otter Tail Power Company.  We thank him for his contributions and wish him the best.
