We will be done in sufficient time before the game kickoff.

Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program
UROP application
material for projects to be conducted between January 1, 2001 to June
15, 2001 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.
The hourly rate to use in determining the stipend is $10.84.
The maximum award is $1,700 (stipend up to $1,400 and expense
allowance up to $300). Completed
applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30
p.m. on October 9, 2000 (late applications will not be accepted).
UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for
research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership
with a faculty member. UROP
affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of
collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation
of a project. It
encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests
outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special
projects. UROP
applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the
educational benefit to the student.
Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have
been funded are on reserve in the library.

RSVP
Partners with Crookston Habitat for Humanity
On August 28 Darcy Koeckeritz
began a one-year commitment as a VISTA volunteer with the Retired and
Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Crookston Area Habitat for
Humanity (CAHFH). Darcy
will be working on improving the infrastructure of CAHFH and will be
working with RSVP to establish volunteer recruitment methods, recruit
RSVP volunteers to assist in building homes, and other Habitat
activities.
The
Crookston Area Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to eliminate
sub-standard housing and homelessness by working with people in need.
Using volunteer labor, donations and donated materials, Habitat
builds or renovates simple, decent houses and sells them to low-income
families at cost, with no profit or interest added.
To date, CAHFH has completed four homes, and hope to have three
more completed this year.
Darcy,
her husband, Al, and their daughter, Hattie, live in rural Crookston.
Darcy and Al have both been very active with Crookston’s Area
Habitat for Humanity. Darcy’s
position as a VISTA will be a wonderful asset to both RSVP and CAHFH.

Call
for Outstanding Achievement Nominations
As
you know, the University is celebrating its sesquicentennial
anniversary through June 2001. It is a most fitting time to celebrate
the accomplishments of our alumni and other individuals.
Earlier
this year, President Yudof sent out a message suggesting that each
department or unit consider submitting at least one nomination for the
honorary degree and/or the Outstanding Achievement Award.
On behalf of the All-University Honors Committee I am writing
this to invite your nominations.
For presentations to be made during the sesquicentennial year,
it is preferred that materials be submitted prior to October 16, 2000,
but no later than December 15, 2000.
If
you have questions about the nomination process, I encourage you to
call Vickie Courtney, University Senate (612-625-4805 or email courtney@mailbox.mail.umn.edu).
Summary requirements, citation samples, and the Awards and
Recognition Procedures and Policy Handbook can be found on the Senate
web page at the following URL http://www1.umn.edu/usenate/alluhonors/handbook.html
