Mentalist Christopher Carter Performing at UMC September 5
Christopher CarterCan Christopher Carter read your mind?

Carter has been called a mind reader, a telepath, and an expert on E.S.P.  Most people just call him amazing.  Through a combination of intuition and applied psychology, he leads a mysterious, funny and thoroughly unforgettable tour through the mysteries of the mind.

This event is sponsored by the SPACE committee and is being held in Bede Ballroom at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5.  Carter will also be performing a "teaser" show before his 8 o'clock performance in the Morsels and Brown Dining Room areas.  Don't forget your U-card!

Applications Sought for University of Minnesota Board of Regents
In February 2001, the Minnesota Legislature will select four members to serve on the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota.  Applications for regent selection are now being sought from Minnesota residents with knowledge and understanding of higher education in Minnesota, and of the role of the University as a major land grant and research institution.

U of M Regents SealRegent candidates should submit an application, indicating interest and qualification, to the Regent Candidate Advisory Council (RCAC) by December 1, 2000.  The 24-member council was created by the legislature and has the statutory responsibility of recruiting, screening, and recommending regent candidates to the legislature.  From the pool of applicants, the council will invite a number of candidates for public interviews in January 2001.  It must then forward to the legislature the names of between two and four candidates for each open position.

Regents serve six-year, staggered terms, with one-third of the twelve board seats open for appointment every two years.  Positions that will be open for appointment by the legislature in 2001 include one in the fifth congressional district, two at-large positions, and one student seat. Candidates for the student position must be enrolled in a degree program at the University at the time of election to the board.  Current regents in those positions that will be open are Chair Patricia Spence, Warren Larson, Michael O’Keefe, and Jessica Phillips.

Regents serve without compensation.  It is estimated that sitting regents spend, on average, at least 40 hours per month fulfilling board responsibilities.  Candidates are ordinarily expected to have prior experience on boards of directors or other governing bodies and have an understanding of complex organizational structures.

Application forms and additional information may be secured by contacting Jennifer Ridgeway, RCAC staff, at 651-296-9002 or accessing the RCAC Web site at http://www.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/lcc/rcac.htm.

Security Alert
Over this Labor Day weekend there were several break-ins to vehicles parked on campus.  This has also been a concern for vehicles parked within the city – several break-ins have been reported in the Crookston Times.  Items preferred by thieves include CD’s, portable/removal CD players and speakers.

Please remember to lock your vehicle.  Remember, most of us have a valuable parking permit hanging from our mirrors.  Also, if you see any suspicious activity, contact the Police Department.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
UROPUROP application material for projects to be conducted between January 1, 2001 to June 15, 2001 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.  The hourly rate to use in determining the stipend is $10.84.  The maximum award is $1,700 (stipend up to $1,400 and expense allowance up to $300).  Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on October 9, 2000 (late applications will not be accepted).  UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.  UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project.  It encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects.  UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student.  Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

A Friendly Parking Reminder!
All faculty, staff, and students who park vehicles on the UMC campus are required to display a valid UMC parking permit.  Warning tickets or friendly reminders were issued to those without a permit during the first week of classes.

Beginning Tuesday, September 5, Parking Citations will be issued to those vehicles not displaying the proper permits.  Vehicles with three or more citations are subject to towing at owner’s expense.  Avoid the hassle and purchase your parking permit today from the Business Affairs Office in Selvig Hall.

Fire Alarm Procedures
With new staff and students on campus at the start of a new academic year, there appears to be confusion about our fire alarm system.  This is a reminder for all students and staff to be aware and react with caution if an alarm sounds in a building.

Please remember that our fire alarms are only “local alarms.”  That means, if the alarm goes off, it is only heard in that building.  It does not, I repeat, does not automatically send an alarm to the fire hall.  Someone must dial 9-911 from a campus telephone and notify 911 dispatch that the fire alarm is sounding in your building.  They will contact the fire department and start them responding to the campus.

The building must be evacuated immediately and no one should be allowed back in until the “all-clear” is given by the fire department!  The alarm might be silenced while the building is being checked, but that does not mean the “all clear” has been given.  Wait for clearance to be given by the fire department.

During evacuation, close all office, classroom, dorm room and hallway doors.  These are constructed to slow the spread of a fire.

There is another important safety issue we all must pay attention to.  If doors are not connected to a magnet and the building fire alarm system, all doors in corridors, stairwells, to classrooms, offices and dorm rooms MUST be closed  at the end of the day and on weekends.  Their purpose is to protect life and property.  If at any time you see an open door late in the day or on a weekend, please close it to protect yourself and your university’s property.

If there are any questions, please call me at 281-8131 or email me at tfeiro@mail.crk.umn.edu.

Thank you and have a safe year!

Official Faculty and Staff Directory Pages
As things settle down to a “normal” pace, please try to verify the information on your official web directory page.  You can find it listed alphabetically at http://www.umcrookston.edu/faculty/direct.htm.  If you see incorrect information, please email me with the correction and/or print out the page, make the corrections in red, and send to me via campus mail.

Some faculty and staff have incomplete info.  I would very much like to include responsibilities, committee and professional membership, awards and honors, and educational background on these pages.   During July 2000 this web directory was accessed over 800 times, so you can see people are using it.  Thanks for your attention.

Intramurals
We would like to invite you to participate in intramurals this year.  This is a great opportunity to get involved with students outside of the classroom.  We are in the process of putting together an intramural web page that we hope to have done in two weeks.  On the web page there will be a place to register your teams, find out about the latest results, rules, policies, procedures, eligibility, cancellations, etc.  Listed below are some of the activities we have planned throughout the year.  If you have any suggestions or are certified in aerobics, black belt karate (or something similar), please feel free to email me or call me (8426).  Hopefully you will be able to join us for a great year of intramurals.
