Academic
Probation Action Plan
To
all advisors, you will soon receive in your mailboxes the following
three items:
- A copy of the Academic Probation,
Suspension and Academic Contract Policy that was adopted last
spring (also available at http://www.umcrookston.edu/campusinfo/policies/probation.htm),
- A copy of the Academic Action Plan that
is required of all students on probation
- A copy of a sheet of strategies for
getting off academic probation
As
a part of the new policy, students on probation are required to visit
their advisor and have their registration "revalidated."
This simply means that you have reviewed the registration with
them. By the time they see you they should have visited with a
counselor and developed their Academic Action Plan, and this would
give you an opportunity to reinforce their plan and make any other
suggestions that might be helpful.
These students are getting a letter reinforcing their need to
complete this activity, so you should be seeing or hearing from them
in the next week. Please
let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for all your help on
getting these students off on the right foot.

Port Remote Dial-in System Up and Running
Finally!
We achieved technical success last week with our new modem pool
featuring 48 good lines. We
invite campus members who are local residents of Crookston (people who
connect to UMC’s network by dialing 281-2687, not campus dorm
residents) to switch from the old, slow, crowded pool to the new,
fast, and much larger pool.
Depending
on the quality of the phone line running to your phone, you may
receive data rates up in the high 40's or low 50's (56 is
unattainable). Compare this to the 28 or 31 you got with the old
lines.
The
Helpdesk is prepared to assist you, but really all you have to do is
change the phone number from 281-2687 to 281-6081.
Another
user issue to be aware of: you
can only get in on the new modems if you are not already logged in
somewhere else on campus or on another modem line.
It is good practice and good security to logout when leaving
the office.

Help Desk Hours
Effective Saturday,
September 16, the UMC Computer Help Desk will be offering new hours
(changes are in BOLD):
Saturday 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m.

We're planning to try
this out for a few weeks and may go back to our old schedule if
necessary. We are doing
this to adjust to students’ peak times and offer better coverage on
our limited budget. If
you have questions or concerns, feel free to email me.

Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program
UROP
application material for projects to be conducted between January 1,
2001 to June 15, 2001 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.
The hourly rate to use in determining the stipend is $10.84.
The maximum award is $1,700 (stipend up to $1,400 and expense
allowance up to $300). Completed
applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30
p.m. on October 9, 2000 (late applications will not be accepted).
UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for
research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership
with a faculty member. UROP
affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of
collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation
of a project. It
encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests
outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special
projects. UROP
applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the
educational benefit to the student.
Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have
been funded are on reserve in the library.
