Review
of UMC's Mission Statement
Bob
Nelson, Melissa Hower-Moritz, Wendell Johnson, Sue Brorson, Larry
Smith, and Barb Muesing have
agreed to serve on a committee to review the present UMC mission
statement that was approved by the Board of Regents in 1992.
http://www.umcrookston.edu/yourcareer/mission/umcmission.htm
Some
revision in the statement is probably in order at this time.
They will share their recommendations and if changes are
recommended they will be forwarded to the Campus and Faculty Assembly
for review and action.

Regents'
Policy on Code of Conduct
Welcome
to the start of a new academic year.
Included
with the September 20th payroll was a copy of the Regents' Policy on
Code of Conduct. This is a policy that applies to all employees as well as
others who receive funds administered by the University or who speak
or act as agents for the University.
As members of the University community, I urge you to read the
Code.
Distribution
of the Code in this way will be an annual event and will provide you
with an opportunity to reacquaint yourselves with its provisions. The
policy may also be found, online, at www.umn.edu/regents/policies/academic/Conduct.html.
If
you have any questions about any part of the Code, please direct those
questions to your supervisor.

G. Yudof, President
Gene
Allen Visit Set for September 28
Gene
Allen, University Director of International Education, will be
visiting UMC on Thursday, September 28, to discuss a University of
Minnesota grant proposal to the Bush Foundation for student study
abroad. The goals of the
grant are to integrate study abroad into the curriculum and reduce the
cost to students. Dr.
Allen would like to visit with UMC faculty interested in creating
global seminars that would be conducted in May with 15 to 25 students
and that involve a 3-week, 3-credit course.
Cost would be in the $3000 plus range for students.
A University in another country would be involved in the
seminar. Topics would
involve what seems best for the particular program or it may be
include an interdisciplinary approach.
Planning and logistics are huge in such projects, but the goal
of increasing the student international experience is important.
The grant would provide for a part-time UMC coordinator and for
some student support. The
meeting will be from 1 to 3 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center D on
Thursday. Please attend
if interested. Thanks.

State
of the University Address
A
reminder: President
Yudof's State of the University Address is scheduled for Thursday,
September 28, 2000, at 3 p.m. The
address will be available via satellite downlink at UMC in Hill 15.

National
Depression Screening Day
October
5 is National Depression Screening Day.
UMC is a regional host site for this event, and will offer free
depression screening by trained mental health professionals between 6
and 9 p.m. Persons
interested in participating should go to Sahlstrom Conference Center
131 to pick up information, and they will then be able to meet
individually with a mental health professional for an assessment.
Information is confidential.
There are many successful treatments available for depression.
As with other illnesses, an accurate diagnosis can be the start
of a return to full health and functioning.
Mark your calendars for October 5.
More information will be posted soon.
If you have questions, contact Laurie Wilson at 8587 or Stacey
Grunewald at 8512.

Grade
Notification for Fall 2000
This
is a reminder that we will be notifying students of their grades using
a web-based system again this year.
By October 3, teaching faculty will receive instructions and
passwords for logging on to the web system.
At that time you will be able to review your class lists and
report any errors to the Registrar’s Office so we can make
corrections. You can
submit the grades at anytime after that date with a final deadline of
October 10 at 4:30 p.m. Remember
that this grade notification system is used to help students make
decisions about changing their studying behavior and/or dropping
courses. It also gives us an opportunity to give students a pat on the
back. Instructions for
using the system will be provided, and Tom Mulvaney at the Computer
Help Desk will be available to provide answers to questions and
support. Thanks for your support of this important process.

New
Features Added to Web Registration System
The
Web registration system is now easier to use, with fewer screens
needed to add a class, "real time" seat availability in
classes, explanations for various holds, and a new link to the
Enrollment Summary page. The
new features are a result of student comments that the "add a
class" process was cumbersome and their desire for "real
time" class seat availability.
More enhancements will be on the way now that the new system is
more stable.
The
new features:
- Instant seat update in Class Schedule
and Section Status reports: The numbers of available seats will
come directly from the system's database in "real time"
unlike the current once per day update.
- Fewer screens for adding a class:
This was the biggest complaint from students. The page
where students currently choose their grading basis and number of
credits will now be the final "Enroll" screen. When
students select their grading option and number of credits, they
click on a button title "Yes - add".
This action will enroll the student if they are eligible
and the class is available. The Current Enrollment by Term screen
will be returned with the student's enrollment for that term
displayed.
- View Holds: A column was added to this
screen titled "Impact." Information displayed here
indicates the impact of the specific hold, i.e.,
Hold registration, Hold transcript, etc.
- New button to link directly to
Enrollment Summary: A
button titled "View Enrollment Summary" has been added
to the View Current Enrollment by term screen.
Before students had to log off the Registration system to
find the link.
- Coming in October: An easier
login/logout process.
Unfortunately
only active students are able to access the Web registration system,
so staff can't log on unless they're in a class this semester.
If you are, check out the new features at http://www.onestop.umn.edu
and log into the registration system using your Internet password and
ID.

Authorizing
Student Drivers
If
you have student employees who might need to drive a University
vehicle or advise a student group, please note the following
information regarding the process that needs to be followed to
authorize them to drive.
Students
must be at least 19 years of age.
They must fill out a Motor Vehicle Record form.
These can be picked up at the Bede Information desk or the
Student Activities/Service Learning office at 106 Bede.
We will soon have a link on the Bede Info Desk web page to
download this. Students
must fill out their name, age, state and drivers license number.
We
then have to fax it down to the Twin Cities, and they have to run it
through the system to be approved.
This normally takes 3-5 days to be approved.
If the student is from another state or from Canada, it will
take longer. After
students are approved their names will be listed on the Club and
Organizations web page under approved student drivers.
Students
must have a clear driving record for two years to be approved by the
University. If they are not approved to drive they should not drive a
University vehicle. We do
not approve them in our office; we simply handle the process so please
help us to make it go more smoothly by following the procedures
outlined above.
Thanks
for your attention to this.
