National
Depression Screening Day
October
5 is National Depression Screening Day.
UMC is a regional host site for this event, and will offer free
depression screening by trained mental health professionals between 7:00
and 9:00 p.m. Persons
interested in participating should go to Sahlstrom Conference Center
131 to pick up information, and they will be then able to meet
individually with a mental health professional for an assessment.
Information is confidential.
There are many successful treatments available for depression.
As with other illnesses, an accurate diagnosis can be the start
of a return to full health and functioning.
Mark your calendars for October 5.
More information will be posted soon.
If you have questions, contact Laurie Wilson at 8587 or Stacey
Grunewald at 8512.

payroll, employee benefit, and employee reimbursement).
If not kept up-to-date, checks will not be received timely or
may be permanently lost. Thanks.

New
Library Resources
I
have created a bibliography of new titles for Fall 2000.
It is arranged by Dewey number, which generally arranges
material by subject. I have jump links to specific Dewey subject areas.
In addition I have included a listing of the Wildlife
Monographs. These were on campus and available, so we cataloged them
and put the information into the PALS system to make them more
accessible. I also
included a listing of the new children's books purchased to support
the Early Childhood Program and the Early Childhood Development
Center. The list is at: http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~JCarlson/new99/new2000/index.htm.
The
new acquisitions list is for traditional paper resources added to the
collection. We now have
access to about 1400 high quality titles in electronic form.
These are titles from major academic and popular publishers in
electronic format via NetLibrary.
To use these books you must register and log in.
They can be downloaded to your computer and used there for the
check out period. You can
make notes and highlight in these books.
To see sample of the titles see http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~JCarlson/new99/new2000/ebooks2.htm.
Notes
on the NetLibrary system and registering with NetLibrary can be found
at: http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~JCarlson/new99/new2000/ebooks.htm.

The
Respectful Workplace Workshop
A major challenge in
today’s workplace is developing and maintaining a healthy work
environment. Change,
increased work demands, reorganization, customer service, and new
technologies can create stressors and tensions within our work
environments. Added to
this is a social trend in which rudeness and incivility towards each
other appears to be on the rise.
UMC’s Office of Human Resources and
Office of Academic Affairs together with the University Employee
Assistance program is presenting a workshop on the UMC campus for you
and your colleagues. This
workshop focuses on taking responsibility for the quality of the
environment in which each of us wants to work.
Lisa Dau, Employee Assistance Program and Javier Silva, Office
of Human Resources from the Twin Cities Campus will be at UMC on
October 9th and 10th to conduct a workshop on
creating a more respectful workplace.
You are invited to attend the following
sessions at our campus. Please
join us for this valuable workshop and to show your support and
efforts towards making your workplace more respectful.

Riding
Instructor Volunteers Sought
I
am looking for six volunteers that would be willing to help out my
riding instructors training class.
I need volunteers to be available from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on
Thursday, October 12th. Volunteers
will need to come wearing appropriate footwear (boots) and jeans.
Each volunteer will be given a private lesson on horse
handling, grooming, safety, bridling, saddling, proper mounting and
dismounting, and possibly a short ride if time permits.
The job at the end of the lesson is to fill out an evaluation
on the student instructor.
So,
those of you who would like the opportunity to learn a little more
about horses, here is your chance!
Depending on the feedback I get, we may do this again.
Please email me if you are interested, and have the time to do
this. Thank you!
