Invitation
to Torch and Shield
As
most of you are probably aware, the Torch and Shield Awards and Dinner
are scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, November 1, 2000.
Some of you might not be aware that one of our own faculty will
be receiving one of the awards. Bill
Peterson will be honored for his dedication and hard work on behalf of
the campus. I wanted to
let you know that the awards program starts at 6:00 p.m. in Bede
Ballroom and the buffet dinner is at 7:00 p.m.
There is a $15 charge if you plan to attend the buffet, and
reservations can be made with Ardis Thompson in the Development
Office. You can attend
the awards event for no charge. This
is an excellent opportunity for all of us to recognize Bill's service
and also a time for us to thank the many people from the community and
surrounding area that are contributing financially and in other ways
to the students at UMC. If
you have any questions or need any other information, please let me
know. If you can't attend
that night, individual acknowledgements of this award can be sent to
Bill.

return envelope
This year’s captains are Gail
Hasbrouck, Don Cavalier, Connie Camrud, Anne Burke, Sharon Olson,
Sandy Schatz, Peggy Sherven, Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, AURI, Stephanie Reck,

Please return the pledge/payroll
deduction form in the return envelope.
(If you choose no contribution, please indicate this on the

The United Way goal this year for UMC
is $6,500, and I will report on our progress in the Bulletin.
Thank you to everyone for your consideration.

Call for Nominations
for John Tate Awards
The
Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost is pleased to
sponsor the 2000-2001 John Tate Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate
Advising. The office
would like your help in identifying and nominating suitable
candidates. Copies of the complete guidelines, nomination form, and a
list of previous award recipients are available at the UMC Office of
Academic Affairs. The
guidelines are also available at http://www1.umn.edu/ohr/awards/.
The deadline for nomination dossiers to reach the selection
committee is Friday, February 9, 2001.
A selection committee of faculty and
professional advisers, a student, and a previous Tate Award recipient
will select up to four faculty and professional advisers from the U of
M system to receive the Tate Award.
Each recipient will receive a gift of $1,500.
The recipient may choose to have the $1,500 transferred to his
or her department for his or her own use.
The awards will be presented at a public ceremony to be held on
Friday, May 11, 2001, at the U of M Gateway.
The award is named after John Tate,
Professor of Physics and first Dean of University College (1930-41).
Tate Awards recognize and reward high-quality academic
advising. They call
attention to the contribution academic advising makes to helping
students formulate and achieve intellectual, career, and personal
goals.

Thanks for
Upbeat Participation
I
want to thank all of the faculty and staff who participated in the
multiple activities that occurred at UMC on Thursday and Friday.
The faculty forum on Thursday night, portfolio training
sessions and the assessment planning sessions on Friday were all such
upbeat and dynamic discussions of issues and initiatives directed at
improving student learning and development here that it was a very
exciting couple of days. For
those who didn't have the opportunity to participate directly, we will
be scheduling follow-ups and ongoing discussions in the near future.
A very sincere thank you for all your enthusiasm and active
interest.
--Doug Knowlton

Accolades
Congratulations
to Del Roelofs,

Year" by the Crookston Chapter of the International Association
of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) on October 18.
Roelofs was honored for his commitment to education and his
interest in people.
Professor
Dan Svedarsky was a delegate to the Third Renewable Natural
Resources Foundation Congress on Sustainability held in Portland,
Oregon, September 6-9. More
than 120 natural resources professionals (including several members of
The Wildlife Society), planners, and governmental officials, attended
the Congress. The goals
of the Congress were to provide an interdisciplinary forum (1) to
explore tools and strategies for community and regional planning for
sustainability, and (2) to examine the evolving role of resource
managers in the twenty-first century.

In
Search of Lefse Photos
I
recently had an essay about LEFSE accepted for an anthology,
tentatively called “Cooking Lessons.”
And I need some help. The
publishers (Rowan and Littlefield) would like to include more images.
I thought maybe someone at UMC would have some good lefse-making
pictures that you might be willing to share.
I'm thinking about pictures of women making lefse for holidays
or family gatherings. In the book, they will be black and white.
Photos would be given full credit and have captions explaining
the who's and what's of the picture.
If
you are interested, that's great.
I'd even be willing to send you a copy of the essay to read
before you send photos, if you would like.
If you know a family that might have pictures and would be
interested, please pass on this request.
Please
contact me at either kelly@epd.engr.wisc.edu
or tracikelly@hotmail.com
My
phone is 608 294 5727 and my postal address is 1042 Erin Street,

you!
