Bush Foundation Grant Opportunity
UMC is participating in a University of Minnesota Bush Foundation Grant to strengthen studying abroad in the new millennium.  The opportunity to participate in the application, as one of four campuses of the University, is exciting and holds significant promise for UMC's students and faculty.  The grant would support scholarships to facilitate increasing the number of students who could take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad.  The grant would provide support for faculty to create seminars that included a structured travel experience and an affiliation with a university in the country or countries of the travel experience.

Studying abroad would strengthen the international dimensions of undergraduate education by supporting the full integration and articulation in program majors offered at UMC.

The goals of the project are:

  • To develop professional alliances that allow academic advisors to integrate and articulate study abroad into academic programs

  • To enhance the undergraduate students' access to meaningful opportunities to study abroad

  • To increase the enrollment in study abroad for students, especially those of limited financial means, students of color, and non-traditional students

Given UMC's strength in technology--and its widespread use of computers--a natural outcome of this project will likely be the internationalization of courses that would enhance the continuing evolution of UMC's curriculum and programs.
--Judy Neppel, Assistant to the Chancellor

Dietetic Technician Program Accredited
Congratulations to Sharon Stewart, Associate Professor and Program Manager of UMC Dietetic Technician program.  At its October 12, 2000, meeting, the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association voted to grant “Accreditation to the Program” to the UMC’s A.A.S. Dietetics Technician program.  The decision was based upon a peer review of the self-study application, a site visit report, and the program’s response.  UMC’s program will remain accredited for a 10-year period before renewal, with an update report due in five years.  UMC’s program received positive feedback from the site visit team this past spring.  According to Sharon Stewart, the group was especially impressed by the fact that since 1995, UMC grads of the program have received a 100% pass rate for the Registration Exam for Dietetic Technicians.

Help Desk Procedures
We are implementing a new system of tracking computer trouble issues throughout the campus. We are requesting that you contact the Help Desk first, (8000) so we can issue an event tracking number to your problem. We will then route you to the appropriate Help Desk personnel to assist you.

We are always open to any suggestion to better our service to you. Please feel free to contact me and/or the other members of our Center's staff with your ideas and concerns.  Thank you for your cooperation.
--Diane Moen, CIO

“Clean Up” of Sunny Server
We're in the process of clearing files and folders that are no longer in use on the Sunny server so that we can free up more space for you to upload more course-related files.  I would appreciate if each and every faculty member could email me and identify what folders of yours we SHOULD NOT delete.  Let's do it within the next two weeks.  By the end of the second week (November 14), I will send out a list of folders and files that are not identified by anyone for confirmation before we delete them.  We will give another week for verification before the final deletion.

I appreciate your help in cleaning up Sunny.  Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
--Dan Lim, Director, Instructional Technology Center

No Hyphens, Please
It has been brought to our attention that when referring to the University of Minnesota at Crookston, a hyphen is occasionally being used in the name.

The correct use is as follows (with comma instead of hyphen):
University of Minnesota, Crookston

We urge everyone to use the correct name and promote that name to all of your contacts.  Thank you.
--Curt Almlie, Director of Institutional Relations

Recycle Directories
If you have an old All University of Minnesota directory, please tear off the cover and drop it off at the Bede Student Info Desk for recycling.  Thank you.
