Policy Regarding Closure of UMC Due to Weather-Related Causes
Any announcements regarding closing of the campus due to weather-related causes will be announced over the local radio and television stations.

If that portion of Highway 2 & 75 immediately in front (west) of the UMC campus is closed, the campus will be closed and only designated critical employees are to report to work or remain at work, unless specifically informed by their supervisors not to report.

The campus will generally not close for weather related conditions if Highway 2 & 75 is open to traffic (i.e., not officially closed by law enforcement agencies or the Minnesota Department of Transportation).
--Doug Knowlton, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

World AIDS Day PlanningWorld AIDS Day 2000
Each year Counseling, Disability Services and Student Health receive information to assist in developing programming around the topic of HIV+ and AIDS.  Those activities tend to primarily occur early in December in recognition of World AIDS Day, December 1.

One of the opportunities that we have is to supply any faculty who want them with booklets featuring current HIV/AIDS related information.  This information covers a variety of topics from geography and economics to infection prevention and support services for persons with HIV and AIDS.

Typically, faculty in biology, anatomy, microbiology, psychology, first aid, sociology, health management and geography have requested and used student booklets.  However, we wanted to open this up to any faculty member who might wish to incorporate into their respective courses a discussion, presentation or journal activity related to the impact of HIV and AIDS on individuals and society.

If you would like to have booklets made up for students in your classes, please notify us of the course or courses and numbers of booklets that you will need.  We will deliver them to you by the last week of November so that the information can be featured sometime on or close to World AIDS Day. There is no charge to you or your department for this material.

HIV/AIDS continues to infect and kill young people from 15-24 at alarmingly high rates, and has surpassed automobile accidents as the #1 killer of young adults.  We need to continue to educate about this very serious threat.

Additionally, during the days before and after December 1, there will be featured speakers and events that are open to the campus community and about which more information will be forthcoming when dates are firmed up.  Thank you all for your continued support.

My Thanks to the UMC Community
My thanks to everyone for a great day on campus last Wednesday, November 1st.  Every event and activity was well received by our guests.  And the attendance was the largest we've ever had.  The early childhood dedication, luncheon, PIAC meetings, Capital Campaign meeting, Torch and Shield Ceremony, Buffet Dinner, every thing was first class.   Many individuals commented to me that they were proud to support UMC and pleased with our continued progress in developing high quality programs.

Thanks also to the Natural Resources Club, Dan Svedarsky, and all of you who were part of presenting a beautiful art piece to Mary Beth and me.  I'm not an eagle but I do get excited every time I see one.  The artwork will grow in sentimental value as the years progress as a remembrance of our journey here together.  Do stop by the office and view it.  I'm proud of it, but more proud that I have the opportunity to work with all of you.
--Donald Sargeant, Chancellor
