Knowlton Comprehensive Review
All people in administrative positions at UMC have annual reviews and periodically have a regularly scheduled comprehensive review.  This year Dr. Doug Knowlton, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, is having his comprehensive review.  The review committee will consist of Bill Peterson, chair, Richard Nelson, Shane Roers, Steve Shirley, Laurie Wilson and Jon Quistgaard, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Bemidji State University.

The review committee is planning a two-part process:

  1. Focus groups will be held to help the committee determine areas to include in the evaluation survey

  2. After the focus groups, a survey form will be developed utilizing input gathered during the focus groups.

The focus groups will be moderated by a Bemidji State University faculty member who has experience conducting sessions like these.  This process has been used successfully at other institutions including BSU, and the committee would like to try it at UMC.

The focus groups will be held in Sahlstrom Conference Center A at the following times:

  1. Tuesday, December 12 from 9 to 10 a.m. will be a general session - anyone interested is invited to attend

  2. Tuesday, December 12 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon will be a faculty session - all faculty are invited to attend

The survey form will then be developed and distributed in January.  Please contact me if you have any questions.
--Bill Peterson

Almlie Comprehensive Review
As a part of the standard, regularly scheduled comprehensive review of administrative positions at UMC, a committee has been assigned to review Curt Almlie.  The review committee consists of Jeff Sinks, chair, George French, Rob Jacobson, Del Roelofs, and Stephanie Reck.  An evaluative survey instrument will be developed and distributed as a part of this process.  Please contact any committee members or me if you have any questions.
--Jeff Sinks

Roelofs Comprehensive Review
Chancellor Sargeant has appointed Don Cavalier, Dave Hoff, John Vallager, and me, Barbara Muesing, as the committee to conduct a comprehensive review of Dr. Del Roelofs, UMC’s development officer.  It’s my privilege to chair the committee.  We have met once with Chancellor Sargeant, Human Resources Director Les Johnson, and Dr. Roelofs to explore how best to approach the review.  We anticipate doing a focus group approach with individuals who are in the best position to provide meaningful feedback.  Anyone interested in participating is welcome to contact any of us on the committee.  Other feedback is also welcome.
--Barbara Muesing

Wildlife Program Evaluation Visit
James E. Miller, National Program Leader, Fish and Wildlife for the USDA will visit UMC November 29 and December 1.

Mr. Miller is very knowledgeable about wildlife programs throughout North America as they relate to agencies (state and federal) and educational curricula at colleges and universities.  In the last 15 years he has led 40 evaluation teams that have reviewed fisheries and wildlife programs and have made recommendations for improvement. This activity is provided as a service to land grant institutions.

We are indeed fortunate at UMC to have this opportunity for Mr. Miller to evaluate our youthful Wildlife Management Program and be able to benefit from his vast experience in observing what works and what doesn’t, and what distinguishes exemplary programs. The goal of the Natural Resources Program at UMC, and with a particular focus on the Wildlife Management Program at this time, is to not simply offer an adequate program but instead one that is nationally competitive. This will enhance institutional visibility as measured by the quality of graduates.  This, in turn, benefits the employability of graduates and promotes an attractive recruiting climate.

After some 34 years of distinguished government service, Mr. Miller will soon be retiring as National Program Leader of Fish and Wildlife with USDA.  In his present capacity he has played a coordinating role with state extension specialists in fisheries and wildlife at land grant universities, directed national programs in 4-H as they relate to conservation, provided information to Congress pertaining to funding needs and policy direction for conservation as they relate to federal conservation programs, and has been very active at the national and international level with The Wildlife Society, most recently as Past President.
--Dan Svedarsky, Program Leader for Natural Resources

Ergonomic Showroom at UMC December 12-13
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety has arranged for staff from our Twin Cities office to bring a portion of the Ergonomic Showroom to our campus on December 12 and 13.  We are grateful that Greg Casura, Occupational Health and Safety Specialist/Ergonomist, and Neil Carlson, Industrial Hygienist/Ergonimist, will be on campus to perform ergonomic reviews of individual faculty and staff work stations, display some of the chairs and work stations available through University contracts, discuss special funding assistance through DEHS (up to 25% reimbursement to your department) and demonstrate the department's ergonomic web page.

I am hopeful that there will be an opportunity for them to get into at least one of our classrooms to review our student work areas and to visit with those involved with the design of the Kiehle renovation to assist with office and work station design.

If you would like to have your individual computer workstation or desk arrangement reviewed for ergonomic support, please contact me by telephone or email.  I am building a list of visits and need to plan for approximately 20 minutes per person.

Greg and Neil will be available for reviews on Tuesday, December 12 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, December 13 from 8 to 11 a.m.  An Ergonomic Showroom will be set up in Conference Center 131 during those times.  Feel free to stop in and ask questions at any time.

If you have any questions prior to those days, please contact me.
--Tom Feiro, Senior Environmental Health and Safety Technician

Emily Spinler Earns Student Conservationist Award
A huge congratulations to Emily Spinler, UMC Natural Resources major from Owatonna, MN, on her recent notification from the Awards Committee of the Minnesota Chapter of The Wildlife Society that she is the 2000 winner of the Student Conservationist Award!  This distinguishes Emily as the top wildlife student in all of Minnesota’s colleges, which is really significant.

Emily was selected for this honor because of her many accomplishments--both in and out of the classroom--which relate to wildlife conservation and furthering the interests and activities of her fellow students through her leadership involvements.  Emily is now the third UMC student in the last four years to receive this prestigious award.  We are so pleased for her sake, the reputation of the Natural Resources Department, and the fledgling Wildlife Management major.

The official presentation of the award will be at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Chapter, Monday, December 4, held in conjunction with the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency.
--Dan Svedarsky, Program Leader for Natural Resources
