Student Lobby Day Set for Feb. 5Editors Note: this message was sent to the student body from Kevin Poppel, UMC’s student SLC representative on January 9.Last year around this time I wrote to all of you requesting your support during Lobby Day!! This year we are lobbying on behalf of the Bede renovation project, which would offer all of YOU a new student center, and the More Than Books Bill, which will lower the prices of your books and supplies each semester. This year's Lobby Day will fall on Tuesday, February 5, 2002. Just like last year, we will leave right away in the morning on the 5th and return back late in the evening. Just as last year we will take charter buses and I'm exploring our options for activities after Lobby day! Last year one of the buses ventured to the Mall of America after Lobby Day and the other returned home. I'm open to suggestions right now as far as our extra curricular activities! (Please be within reason.) I will have a table set up by Morsels and/or in Bede throughout the course of the next few weeks with sign-up sheets, and more info so stop by and check out the specs! Your enthusiasm and support is needed more than ever this year! And remember the trip is totally free and open to all! Thank you and let me know if you’re interested! --Kevin Poppel, Student Legislative Coalition Chair Mileage Rates for University Business

Leaders work as volunteers to help welcome new students to UMC and also help staff facilitate the four-day orientation program. This position is a great learning experience for students (not to mention a great resume builder). Some other benefits include: a weekend retreat at Itasca State Park, free T-shirts, free meals through orientation weekend and training, and an opportunity to move into campus housing before any other students do!
Applications for S.O.S. Leaders for Fall
2002 are now available at the First Year Experience Office (5 Hill

Recommendation Faculty and Staff Updates David comes to UMC fresh from a stint in Switzerland where he worked on landscape dynamics and macroinvertebrates of floodplain rivers in the Italian Alps. He also has worked for the U.S. Forest Service conducting research on arctic rivers and the temperate rainforest in Alaska. His position at UMC is being funded primarily through a grant from Veden Fellowship awarded to John Loegering, assistant professor of natural resources, and the Northwest Regional Partnership. Wendy Greenberg has been hired is an adjunct faculty member in the Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources, where she will teach Soil Science and co-teach Land Use Planning with Dan Svedarsky, professor of natural resources. She has a master’s and Ph.D. in Soil Science from Texas A & M University and a B.S. in Agronomy and Soil from the University of Maryland. Wendy worked three years as a Peace Corps Soil Scientist in Nepal, where she was involved in soil survey and interpretations for land use applications. She also worked as a Soil Scientist in New York and Texas for the Natural Resources Conservation Service specializing in soil survey. Her Ph.D. research was conducted in Jamaica on land reclamation so she brings a broad geographical perspective to soils and land use. She also teaches at Bemidji State University, where her husband, Mark, is a Plant Ecologist.
