Diplomas and
Certificates Will Show Campus and College
Beginning this month, the
University of Minnesota diploma and certificate have a new look to
better reflect each graduate's course of study.
The new format includes
the campus from which the diploma or certificate is issued. Previously,
all diplomas stated "given in Minneapolis."
In addition to
signatures of the University president and the secretary of the Board of
Regents, two signatures have been added: that of the dean for the
college from which the student is graduating and that of the chancellor
(for students in Crookston, Duluth, and Morris) or provost (for students
in the Twin Cities).
The first groups to
receive the new format diplomas and certificates are the fall 2001
graduating class and the Graduate School's January 2002 grads.

UMC Fire Alarms Now
Monitored
UMC buildings that have a fire
alarm system are now monitored 24 hours per day. In late December we
completed an alarm system network project with Simplex. As a result, we
now have 24 hour monitoring if a fire alarm sounds in one of our
buildings.
If a fire alarm sounds
in a building due to a pull station, smoke detector or sprinkler head
engaging, Simplex Monitoring Service receives the notification within
seconds and calls the Crookston Fire Department to announce a fire alarm
in a specific building. The fire department will respond immediately to
the indicated building and go directly to the alarm panel to find the
cause of the alarm. This may take at least 5-6 minutes to arrive on the
site depending upon the weather conditions, traffic and traffic lights,
and the building location on campus.
Our responsibility as
employees and students is to evacuate the building until the fire
department has arrived and given the all clear. We can no longer remain
in the buildings and “just wait to see if it really is a fire.” Our
classroom buildings have not been following safe fire alarm procedures.
Leave your office, classroom, or dorm room. Close and lock the office,
classroom or dormitory doors for security. Students and faculty should
take their computers with them from classrooms for security. Evacuate
via an outside door or through a link into the next building for your
safety. All buildings have “fire doors” in hallways and stairwells. If
they are connected to the fire alarm system, they will close when an
alarm is initiated. If they are not connected, pull them shut to keep
smoke and fire from extending into other buildings.
As you know, many of
our campus buildings are conveniently linked. Fire doors are essential
to slow or prevent the spread of smoke and fire. The recent fire at
Southwest State University had smoke damage through many buildings due
to extension through open links and tunnels.
Thank you for your
attention to this important safety matter. Protect yourself and your
university by following safe fire alarm procedures. If there are any
questions, please contact Tom Feiro at -8131 or
tfeiro@umn.edu.

Alan Clarke Visit Set for April
29
Alan Clarke,
Senior Development Officer for ICT and Learning with the National
Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NAICE) in England, is planning
a visit to UMC for April 29 and 30. Clarke is interested in UMC’s
pioneering work with the integration of notebook computers across the
curriculum. Since 1999 he has managed a parallel initiative that uses
laptop computers to deliver and support learning in local communities in
England. He is also interested in discussing faculty and staff
development programs relating to technology. More details will be given
as his visit nears.
Current MWR Reciprocity forms for 2001
expire on 2-28-02. If a new MWR Reciprocity form is not received in
Payroll Services by 2-26-02, Minnesota income tax will be withheld from
your next paycheck instead of the taxes for your resident state. Any
Minnesota taxes withheld because Form MWR has not been completed cannot
be refunded by Payroll Services.
Detailed information
concerning the rules for withholding reciprocal state taxes, and the MWR
Reciprocity form is available on the Human Resources Self Service web
site at

President's Award for
Outstanding Service
The President's Award for
Outstanding Service was established in 1997 to recognize faculty and
staff who have provided exceptional service to the University. This
award is presented each year in the spring and honors active or retired
faculty or staff members who have gone well beyond their regular duties
and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University
community. Nominations for this award are due by Friday, March 1, 2002,
and should be submitted to:
President's Award
Committee
c/o Vickie Courtney
University Senate Office
427 Morrill Hall
Nominators must be
current members of the University of Minnesota faculty or staff or
alumni of the University. Nomination letters should focus on the
nominator's personal knowledge of the nominee's exceptional service,
such as innovative service to students, the University community,
individual units of the University, or outreach beyond the University.
For more information
about this award or the nominating process, please call the University
Senate Office at 612-625-9369. Also, please see the enclosed full
description of the award and nomination requirements.
I urge you to bring
forward nominations so that more individuals providing outstanding
service to the University will receive well-earned recognition, and the
University will continue to be a leader in setting our community's
standards of excellence.

New Look for UMC Home Page
By now you’ve
probably noticed the new look for UMC’s main home page. This “facelift”
was first posted on January 3 to mark the new year. I worked with a
group of students and a few faculty and staff members to refine the look
(we went through about five drafts to get to the final version).
Overall reaction has been very positive, especially among students—which
is great, because the new look was especially designed to appeal to
prospective students. Tom Mulvaney is working on a student portal
tentative called “See My U,” and that will receive a prominent link from
the main page. As always, constructive comments are welcome.
