Hunger Banquet February 19
UMC is hosting its first ever
Hunger Banquet on Tuesday, February 19, at 6 p.m. in Bede Ballroom.
We'd love to see lots of students there, and if you see any beneficial
ties between the banquet's message and your classes, we'd love it if you
would encourage your students to attend. The cost is $5.75 per person,
but students on the meal plan only need to swipe their card. All the
money raised by the Hunger Banquet will be donated to the Care and Share
Center in Crookston.
We have a sign-up sheet
at the Bede Info Desk, or students can simply email me saying they're
coming. Or if you'd like to make it a class outing, just let me know
and we'd be more than happy to accommodate you.
If you're intrigued
and/or unsure about what a Hunger Banquet is all about, please take a
moment and visit
www.oxfamamerica.org. That site has an abundance of information and
should answer most of your questions.

Seeking Alumni Success Stories
The Office of University Relations is working on a couple
publications in which we would like to showcase UMC alumni success
stories. We would also like to feature them in the Torch, our alumni
magazine.
I am asking your help in identifying
particularly successful UMC grads from over the past 30 years. I know
many of you still keep in close contact with the type of UMC grads we
are looking for.
If you know of any UMC alumni who are in
leadership or upper management positions, have completed graduate or
Ph.D. work, or who have some other notable accomplishments, please
forward their names and contact info to me or Curt Almlie.
We know there are many successful UMCers out
there! Thanks for your help!

First Year
Experience Reports Available
There are two reports available regarding first-year students
enrolled for Fall 2001. The first report lists demographic and
retention data for all NHS and students in the Living and Learning
Program (First
Year Experience Retention Report, Fall-Spring 2001-2001). The
second report lists details regarding NHS students on probation (NHS
Academic Probation Summary). Please note that these reports do not
include transfer students or PSEO students. Both reports are included
with this edition of the UMC Bulletin. If you have questions, please
feel free to contact Kami Mattson, Director of First Year Experience at
kmattson@mail.crk.umn.edu or #8339.

Audio Streaming of UMC Athletics
We’ve recently completed the repositioning of the video/audio
streaming station from ITC into Robertson 106, and the following pages
have been updated.
Athletics audio streaming page;
www.umcrookston.edu/people/athletics/audio-stream/
Men's Basketball archive streaming page:
www.umcrookston.edu/people/athletics/audio-stream/Basketball-Men/
Women's Basketball archive streaming page:
www.umcrookston.edu/people/athletics/audio-stream/Basketball-Women/
All games this season except for last week’s
women's game (due to new deck set-up) have been successfully live
streamed. Because of previous technical problems and KROX schedule
conflicts, not all of the games have been successfully archived. The
new system setup has been tested, and I do not foresee any problems with
future events on the part of UMC Media Services.
Thank you!

Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program
UROP application material for intersession projects (from May 20,
2002 to June 30, 2002) or regular year projects (from June 17, 2002
through June 15, 2003) is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.
The maximum award is $1,700 – stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is
$10.84) and expense allowance up to $300. Completed applications should
be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on March 4, 2002
(late applications will not be accepted). UROP offers financial awards
to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects
undertaken in partnership with a faculty member. UROP affords
undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a
faculty member on the design and implementation of a project. At the
same time, faculty have the opportunity to work closely with students
and receive valuable assistance with their own research or professional
activity. UROP encourages students to conduct research and pursue
academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to
work on special projects. UROP applications are judged on the quality
of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student.
Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded
are on reserve in the library.

Muesing Appointed to State Position
On
February 6 Governor Ventura unveiled a strategic framework for merging
the Department of Trade and Economic Development (DTED) and the
Department of Economic Security (DES) into a single new department
called the Workforce and Economic Development Department (WEDD). WEDD
will consist of two divisions – the Workforce Development Division and
the Division of Trade, Tourism and Economic Development.
DTED Commissioner
Rebecca Yanisch announced that Barbara Muesing will be appointed Deputy
Commissioner of the Workforce Development Division. Beginning March 4,
she will take a leave of absence from her current post as Associate to
the Dean of the College of Continuing Education at the University of
Minnesota. Barbara was formerly the director of outreach at UMC.
In a news release, Commissioner Yanisch
said, “…the appointment of an experienced educator like Barbara Muesing
reinforces the administration’s conviction that education is a primary
catalyst for both workforce and economic development in our state.”
Meyer Hired as New Director of
Development
Michael L. Meyer has
been hired as the director of development at UMC. He will assume his
new responsibilities on February 14. Meyer comes to UMC after a
two-year stint as director of development for the Special Olympics of
North Dakota. He has also served as director of marketing for athletic
programs at both UND and the University of New Mexico. He replaces Del
Roelofs, who will remain on staff at UMC part time as a development
officer with a major focus on working with alumni of the Northwest
School of Agriculture.
