UMC
Forum on Civic Engagement May 6
Public universities,
particularly Land Grant Universities, have a long history of serving
citizen interests. Today,
however, the future of the public university as a provider of public
goods is receiving much attention. U of M Executive Vice President and Provost Bob Bruininks is leading a
University-wide initiative to evaluate and articulate the
characteristics of a civically engaged campus. As part of the effort, the University of Minnesota Task Force on
Civic Engagement is sponsoring forums on all four campuses to highlight
connections between public scholarship, civic learning, and community
partnership.
UMC’s forum will feature
civically engaged thinking and activity, and participants will explore
the value and meaning of civic engagement as
academic work. The forum is scheduled for Monday May 6, from
1:30 to 4:00 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center A and B. Special
invitations have been sent to "early career faculty," but
all faculty and staff who have an interest are welcome.

UMC has a special place within the University of Minnesota.
It’s mission, history, and geography are unique.
Moreover, its transformational successes over the past decade
give the campus unique character, capacity, and opportunity.
For the purpose of the small group portion of this forum,
participants will use the three broadly defined components of civic engagement
(public scholarship, civic learning, and community partnership) as a
guide to explore the following:
-
What unique contribution(s) might UMC make toward
reinvigoration of the public purpose and civic mission of the
University of Minnesota as a result of its special mission and
circumstances?
-
In your experience and from the panel discussion, what
personal characteristics and professional priorities and interests
do civically engaged faculty share?
- How must we change our thinking, systems, and/or
structures to encourage the pursuit of civically engaged work,
particularly by early career faculty?

LCD Projector Update
A quick note to inform all faculty and staff of the addition of a third
LCD Projector for check out from Media Services. As of April 22,
Media Services has three check out LCD Projectors to meet the growing
need of faculty and staff for this equipment.
In the past, two units were not enough at some
times. We apologize for the times we had to say no to your request
because both units were out, and hope that this addition to our
inventory will help take the pressure off.
Please call ahead to schedule a projection unit
well in advance so we can secure a unit in your name for the times you
need it.

wonderful years on this campus and I so appreciated this celebration
given to me by Bede Hall Staff and the Student Leadership of Campus
Ministry. I was truly overwhelmed. I feel privileged and blessed to
have so many wonderful friends and memories of my time on this campus.
I will continue to ask God’s blessing on you and on UMC. Thank you!

Accolades
Congratulations to the
students, faculty, and staff of UMC’s Natural Resources
Department. With last week’s annual tree planting trip to the
Chippewa National Forest, they celebrated their 20th
anniversary of volunteer tree planting there. In that time, it’s
estimated that their efforts have resulted in nearly 150,000 trees being
planted. That adds up to quite a forest in its own right! The
following students took part in the tree planting trip: Chris Alford,
Nico Bennet, Kara Clancy, Tyler Gensrich, Ryan Gilbertson, Kati
Klaverkamp, Jenny Linder, Dan Oberg, and Lance Readel.
