Regents
Relocate Meeting
Because of Tuesday's terrorism
attacks and national tragedy, the planned meetings of the U of M Board
of Regents have been relocated from the Crookston Campus to the Twin
Cities Campus. Refer to the Regents' website for further
information:

Online Learning
Opportunity
My name is Wanda Loerch, and I am
a Program Associate with the Info Tech dept in the College of Continuing
Education, Twin Cities campus. The reason I am writing to you is that I
want to tell you about a course we will be offering as an on-line
interactive learning opportunity, and it might be of interest to some of
the adult learners in your community.
Beginning October 2, we
will be offering an on-line, interactive version of our Introduction to
Programming With Java course. This is an excellent course for anyone
who would like to begin training for a career as a computer programmer,
or for someone who would like to find out if that field is a good fit
for them. The course will be taught by Gerry Kauma, one of our most
popular instructors. Gerry has a strong background as both an
instructor and an industry professional. His is able to bring this
experience into his classroom, and provide instruction on the latest
industry standards while addressing the learning needs of beginning Java
programming students. In addition, our course materials are updated
before each offering to ensure that students are learning the latest
that technology has to offer.
The Introduction to
Programming with Java on-line course will run from Oct. 2 to Nov. 1,
Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 to 10 p.m. central time. An exciting
aspect of this course is that it is interactive, which means that
students will be able to ask questions and hear the lecture through the
use of a mike and headphones. Students who enroll in this October pilot
on-line course are eligible for a 50% discount from the standard course
price, which is a great deal. Upon completion of the course students
will earn 4.0 CEU's as well. More details about this course can be
found at the Java website <www.cce.umn.edu/ejdp>.
Please share this
information the adult learners in your community. If they have further
questions about this course or others, please feel free to direct them
to our website at <www.cce.umn/infotech>.
We can also be reached at our e-mail address infotech@cce.umn.edu or our
info tech help line 612-624-4273.
Academic Planning Calendar
Attached is the
Academic Planning
Calendar for this academic year. Barb Cournia has done a great job
putting reminders into the calendar. Faculty will also get a paper copy
in their boxes so they don't need to print it out. If you have any
questions just let me know.
--Doug Knowlton, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Gevens Named Interim AAC Director
Lynn
Gevens has been named the Interim Director of the Academic Assistance
Center (AAC). Lynn has been a part of the staff in the AAC for some
time. This interim arrangement will allow for coordination of the AAC
services with Student Support Services, Disability Services, and the
First Year Experience Program. Lynn will also be coordinating with the
Center for Learning Foundations as CLF maintains its responsibility for
delivery of the developmental courses associated with the AAC. This
will also allow Marsha Odom, director of the Center for Learning
Foundations and the previous director of the AAC, to attend to the new
arrival of increased numbers of Applied Studies/ROTC students and the
increasing activity in the assessment area.
--Doug Knowlton, Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs
Stortroen Hired in ITC
Rebekah
Stortroen has been hired as an information technology professional
within the Instructional Technology Center (ITC). Her main
responsibilities will be to assist ITC Director Dan Lim and other
faculty and staff with technology integration issues. Sarah Wilson will
remain on staff through September to assist in Rebekah’s training.
Rebekah is a 2000 UMC alum. She had worked as a student employee for
the ITC last year.
Campus Assembly Dates for
2001-2002
The Campus Assembly dates for the
2001-2002 academic year will be November 2, 2001, (Fall Semester) and
March 22, 2002, (Spring Semester). Both meetings will be held in Dowell
Hall 207 beginning at 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Please
try to attend these important meetings.
An agenda for the meetings will be sent to
you in advance. Could you please contact me when you know who will be
representing the various committees that will be reporting at the
meetings?

Services
GLBT Services
During the 2000-2001 academic
year the first Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) organization
was established on campus. A part-time unpaid counseling center intern
from the University of North Dakota supported the organization. This
support clearly demonstrated a need for services that could develop,
coordinate, implement and evaluate programs that affirm GLBT people.
Providing services to these students fits UMC’s goal of developing and
supporting a more diverse student population.
This fall UMC will
officially establish the Office of GLBT Services within the Counseling
and Career Center. A part-time coordinator will be hired to provide
direct services and to support current staff in the delivery of
services. The mission and processes for delivering services will be
based on similar programs funded at the other campuses of the University
of Minnesota.
The GLBT services
coordinator will provide leadership by collaborating with other
collegiate units, local, state, and national organizations. The outcome
should be an improved campus climate that addresses the harmful effects
of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender
identification. Services provided will include counseling, information
and referrals, advocacy, and educational resources and programming.
Money to establish this
office has been acquired from a grant from the U of M’s Office of the
Associate Vice President for Multicultural and Academic Affairs along
with in-kind support money from UMC.
Accessing Library
Databases Online
Beginning October 1, 2001, the
UMC modem pool will no longer be operational. After that time, anyone
who is interested in using library databases from anywhere but on campus
must use a piece of software called Virtual Private Networking (VPN).
The software is part of Win2000 and is
included in the standard load for UMC laptop computers. You just have
to customize it to work with the UMC network. For instructions on how
to do this, use the instructions provided
<http://www.umcrookston.edu/technology/computerserv/helpdesk/dial-up/index.htm>.
For versions of Windows other than Win2000,
VPN can be downloaded
<http://www.umcrookston.edu/technology/computerserv/helpdesk/dial-up/index.htm>
from the UMC Help Desk homepage.
If you have questions regarding the
installation of VPN, please call the UMC Help Desk at 281-8000 or stop
in at Dowell Hall 104.
If you have questions regarding how to use the databases or if you have
questions regarding the content of the databases, please call the
Library at 281-8399 or stop in at the library.

of Library Services
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
UROP application material for
projects to be conducted between January 1, 2002 to June 15, 2002 is now
available in the Academic Affairs Office. The maximum award is $1,700 –
stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is $10.84) and expense allowance up to
$300. Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs
Office by 4:30 p.m. on October 8, 2001 (late applications will not be
accepted). UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for
research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with
a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational
experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and
implementation of a project. It encourages students to conduct research
and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by
employing them to work on special projects. UROP applications are
judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational
benefit to the student. Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC
students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

projects. Pick-up time will be at 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our
student worker will be picking up the projects, so please make sure that
tests are secure by placing them in a sealed envelope. Please email Sue
Dwyer and Linda Wilkens that a print project is awaiting pick-up. This
will assure that your project is completed in a timely manner.
