Classroom
Schedule Updated, Online
The schedule of classrooms at UMC
for fall semester 2001 is posted at <www.umcrookston.edu/yourcareer/academics/bulletintemp.htm>.
It is updated on a regular basis.
Reservist Information
The American Association of
Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) has learned that
law enforcement officials, as part of their investigation into the
identity of the hijackers and their possible associates, have requested
non-directory information on students enrolled at some institutions. We
have been informed by the Family Policy Compliance Office that it views
nonconsensual release of non-directory information to law enforcement
officials investigating the tragic events of this week as ALLOWABLE as
"necessary to protect the health or safety of the student or other
individuals" (34 CFR 99.36).
Second, as you may already be aware, news
sources have reported that up to 50,000 reservists could be called up
for active duty. As was the case with the Gulf War and Yugoslavia
Peacekeeping efforts, a significant number of reservists may be enrolled
at colleges and universities. AACRAO would like to encourage all of its
members to review their policies regarding student withdrawal requests
in connection with service in the U.S. Armed Forces, so that they can
assist affected students with refunds and other administrative matters.
--Jerry Sullivan, Executive Director
Editor’s Note: According to Bob Nelson,
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, UMC grants a retroactive withdrawal
and 100% tuition refund for any reservist called to active duty.
Family

invited to take part in events throughout the weekend. For more

Computer Virus
Statistics for the Last Month
Number of viruses cleaned or
quarantined from incoming email since August 10: 1,855
Number of computers found to have virus infected files on them from
sources other than email since August 27: 146
Number of viruses cleaned or quarantined from these 146 computers: 414
Number of UMC computers with antivirus software installed: 1190
Number of viruses cleaned on files saved to UMC servers (BASS) from
infected computers without virus protection: 39
Number of computer problems reported to Help Desk due to virus
infections: 0
We have finally found a
method of removing the Command antivirus software from those desktop
computers that still have it. We will continue to work on removing
these versions and installing the new Trend antivirus software. All
student laptops have virus protection on them.
If you have the new
faculty T21 laptop you do not have Command installed. If you
have not installed Trend you may copy / paste this link (from on
campus) into your browser address bar:
\\sauger\ofcscan\autopcc.exe
and press Enter. The
install is simple and automatic.
Please do not assume
that antivirus software will completely protect you. You still must
exercise responsible computing. Next week will follow with some tips
and suggestions to avoid virus infections.

Informational
Meeting Regarding the University’s Medical Plan
As you are aware, the University
of Minnesota will be changing its health plan at the end of this year.
The University will be adopting a self-insured system in an effort to
tailor a package that better meets the needs of University employees and
control costs.
This is a reminder that
a team will be on our campus to conduct an UPlan Employee Informational
Forum designed to explain the University’s new medical plan. Prior to
the meeting, you will want to visit the web site listed below. You may
want to take some time to think about issues that are of particular
importance to you and your family and prepare a list of questions to
bring to the meeting.
Steve Burrows, the new
Director for Health Programs and Vic Fickling, University Benefits
Counselor are scheduled to be at UMC on September 26th to
conduct two informational meetings with employees. The presentation
will last about 50 minutes and will allow time for questions.

Recycling Printer Cartridges
Ray Dusek, Principal of Cathedral
School in Crookston has requested our assistance with a fundraising
effort his school is undertaking.
Cartridges for Kids is an innovative
recycling program designed to protect the earth and to raise funds to
benefit K-12 school children by paying cash for empty inkjet, laser and
fax copier cartridges. It is estimated that there are over 125 million
pounds of empty toner cartridges dumped into U.S. landfills annually.
Unfortunately, these cartridges are made up of high-grade industrial
plastics that take at least 1,000 years to decompose. Cartridges For
Kids pays up to $1.00 for inkjet cartridges and up to $8.00 for Laser,
fax and toner cartridges.
Bede Info Desk and Robertson #106 will be
the designated drop off points for these items. For those concerned with
leaking cartridges, plastic zip lock storage bags will be available for
pickup at the info desk. I have checked with John Rodseth and have been
given the OK to send these storage bags with cartridges to the Info Desk
via the internal campus mail. The next time you go by the Bede Info
Desk, pick up a storage bag so you have one handy. Please take the time
to send your cartridges in versus tossing them into your garbage can.
For further information on this project visit the web site <www.cfktoday.com>.
Or give me a call at ext. 8392.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
UROP application material for
projects to be conducted between January 1, 2002 to June 15, 2002 is now
available in the Academic Affairs Office. The maximum award is $1,700 –
stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is $10.84) and expense allowance up to
$300. Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs
Office by 4:30 p.m. on October 8, 2001 (late applications will not be
accepted). UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for
research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with
a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational
experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and
implementation of a project. It encourages students to conduct research
and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by
employing them to work on special projects. UROP applications are
judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational
benefit to the student. Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC
students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

UMC Printing Drop Site
The Library has a shelf in their
office area where faculty/staff can drop off and pick up print
projects. Pick-up time will be at 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our
student worker will be picking up the projects, so please make sure that
tests are secure by placing them in a sealed envelope. Please email Sue
Dwyer and Linda Wilkens that a print project is awaiting pick-up. This
will assure that your project is completed in a timely manner.
