Ergonomics Show October 2
The University of Minnesota
Department of Environmental Health and Safety is sponsoring an ergonomic
road show on all campuses of the U of M. The program will be at UMC on
Tuesday, October 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bede Ballroom. Feel free
to stop by throughout the day. Ergonomics specialists will provide
real-time solutions with ergonomic products and reviews at two scheduled
seminars, the first at 10 a.m., and a repeat session at 2 p.m.
The purpose of the
program is to bring in ergonomic support staff from the University as
well as contracted vendors who supply a variety of workstation equipment
options to improve our computer and laboratory working environments
requiring repetitive motion. We all know, first hand, the impact of
computers on all of our jobs here at the Crookston campus.
The information
presented October 2 will help answer some of the questions we may have
about signs and symptoms such as, fatigue, stiffness, stress and other
physical discomforts we may have from prolonged work at the computer or
in a laboratory. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is
able to provide partial funding support for the purchase of equipment to
improve our ergonomic working conditions. A number of UMC employees
have already been able to take advantage of this program.
Please plan to take the
time to attend whenever convenient throughout the day. Two seminar
times are scheduled and demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the
day. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me!!
Have a great day!
--Thomas A. Feiro, Senior EHS Technician, Department of Environmental
Health & Safety

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
UROP application material for
projects to be conducted between January 1, 2002 to June 15, 2002 is now
available in the Academic Affairs Office. The maximum award is $1,700 –
stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is $10.84) and expense allowance up to
$300. Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs
Office by 4:30 p.m. on October 8, 2001 (late applications will not be
accepted). UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for
research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with
a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational
experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and
implementation of a project. It encourages students to conduct research
and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by
employing them to work on special projects. UROP applications are
judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational
benefit to the student. Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC
students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

Sculpture: For
Your Information
Here are some interesting facts
about the sculpture, which was recently lowered for eventual relocation
across the street on the mall.
The sculpture is
composed of 16 tons of granite designed by sculptor Stanley Johnson, a
Crookston native. It reaches 30 feet in to the sky. The granite
originates from the Cold Spring Granite Company. The sculpture was
completed in the fall of 1981 at an approximately cost of $18,000 to
$20.000.
“The sculpture
represents the idea of self development in that the form begins with
defined body of material and progresses in upward stages of refinement
to the maximum height attainable for its beginning size. As each stage
rises a further refinement occurs showing productive activity with the
waterfall and internal light,” according to Johnson.
Johnson continued,
“This is not too different from the development of an individual toward
becoming a professional in his chosen field. The rough corners are
trimmed and reshaped. The inner glow begins and confidence flows to
pass security to others. If everything continues to work, his or her
light penetrates further and with more inspiration to more people.”
When it was completed,
the sculpture was the only large-scale outdoor sculpture of its type in
northwest Minnesota. At that time, in the opinion of many artistically
conscious people in the area, a sculpture of this kind was to not only
beautify the community’s college campus, but was also to inspire further
works and awaken appreciation for visual art in this area.
Now, you know the rest
of the story!
