Haunted House October 31
UMC students will host a "Haunted House" in Bede Student Center on Wednesday, October 31.  The event will be divided into two “levels of scariness.”  From 5 to 6:30 p.m. it will be intended for younger children.  The level of scariness will move up to “PG-13” for older children and adults from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.  A donation covers admission.  The cost is $2 for UMC students and everyone under 18 years of age and $4 for all others.  As in previous years, the proceeds will be split between two charities.  This year they include the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity.

Capital Investment Tour November 6
The Minnesota House Capital Investment Committee is scheduled to tour the UMC campus on Tuesday, November 6.  The group will arrive at 4:00 p.m. for a one-hour visit.  More information will be distributed as it becomes available.

Call for Nominations for the 2001-2002 John Tate Awards
The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost is pleased to sponsor the 2001-2002 John Take Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.  I am writing to remind you of this award and to solicit your help in identifying and nominating suitable candidates.  Copies of the complete guidelines, nomination form, and a list of previous award recipients are located at the following web address:  http://www1.umn.edu/ohr/awards/.

The deadline for nomination dossiers to reach the selection committee is Friday, February 1, 2002.

This award is named in honor of John Tate, Professor of Physics and first Dean of University College (1930-41).  Tate Awards serve to recognize and reward high-quality academic advising.  They call attention to the contribution academic advising makes to helping students formulate and achieve intellectual, career, and personal goals.  By highlighting examples of outstanding advising, the Tate Awards identify professional models and celebrate the role that academic advising plays in the University’s educational mission.

A Selection Committee, comprised of equal numbers of faculty and professional advisers, a previous Tate Award recipient, and a student member, will select up to four faculty and professional advisers at the University of Minnesota to receive the Tate Award.  Each winner will receive a gift of $1,500 or the recipient may choose to have the $1,500 transferred to their department for their own use.  The awards will be presented at a public ceremony to be held in April 2002.

If you need more information regarding guidelines, etc., please contact University Relations.

Pam Holsinger-FuchsNikki Fiorini
Pam Holsinger-Fuchs
and Nikki Fiorini presented at the Minnesota College Personnel Association fall conference held at Metro State University in St. Paul on October 22 and 23.  The workshop, entitled Campus Community Connection through Service Learning, covered issues related to our Service Learning program and the many projects that our faculty has incorporated into their various courses.

Jerry NagelJerry Nagel, President of Northern Great Plains, Inc., based in the Valley Technology Park Building at UMC, has been selected to serve on the board of directors for the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD).  Nagel will replace June Holley as a private sector representative.  His term will run from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2005.  Nagel was selected, in part, because of his work on initiatives involving integrated value chains and e-commerce from a community perspective--two areas the NCRCRD will be focusing in the coming years.

The NCRCRD, located at Iowa State University, is one of four regional centers coordinating rural development research and education throughout the United States.  It is supported by the land-grant universities of the North Central region, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and grants and contracts from private foundations.

The mission of the NCRCRD is to initiate and facilitate rural development research and education programs to improve the social and economic well-being of rural people in the region. The NCRCRD also provides leadership in rural development regionally and nationally by identifying, developing and supporting programs on the vanguard of emerging issues.
