Doctoral Program Discussion Meeting
On Friday, December 7 at 1:30 p.m. in the AURI meeting room (1st floor) there will be a meeting to discuss a doctoral program (EdD) that will be starting this summer. This program is from the Leadership Academy which is part of the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development.  We hope to have a cohort group that will meet here in Crookston. Members of each Leadership Academy cohort meet in interest-based learning communities one weekend a month during each academic semester and two weeks in the summer for three years.  This allows participants to build a valuable network of friendships and professional relationships with higher education administrators around the region and with University faculty.  If you are interested in more information please come to the meeting or contact Pam Holsinger-Fuchs at 281-8505 or email billa@tc.umn.edu for a packet of information or visit the website at wcfe.coled.umn.edu/leadershipacademy

Northern Tier High Technology Web Site
As part of a project for Bemidji State and the Blandin Foundation I am assisting in the Development of this site/portal called the Northern Tier High Technology Corridor.

Located at www.ntht.org.  This site is just being filled with content, people, discussions etc.  I encourage you to go to the site - click on the Discussion area and then find the Knowledge Profiles.  You then need to request a user name and password.  Then you can add your talents and expertise to the area.  It is a searchable data set based on talents, experience, location etc.  You can find colleagues - be found by people needed assistance - and more.

Also, if you know of businesses and business issues that should be on the site, let me know.  This business area is where I am focusing my attention to make it bigger and better.  Other comments are also welcome.  Thanks.

Thank You from DSU, Madison, South Dakota
Editor’s note:  the following letter, dated November 21, 2001, was sent to Judy Neppel, Assistant to the Chancellor.

“On behalf of the Dakota State University faculty who visited the University of Minnesota, Crookston, two weeks ago, I send my sincere thanks to the faculty, staff and students of UMC.  In particular, we thank Vice Chancellor Knowlton and yourself for hosting our visit.  In the series of meetings and tours that were organized for us on Friday, Nov. 9, we gathered a considerable amount of information about the use and assessment of educational computer technology at UMC.  We greatly appreciated how well organized our schedule was and well prepared everyone was to answer our wide-ranging questions.  I was especially impressed with the presentations and ask that you please convey our thanks to those students, faculty, staff and administrators who undertook them.  We especially thank faculty Soo-Yin Lim-Thompson, Bill Peterson, and Phil Baird, ITC Director Dan Lim, Adult Learning Center Director Jane Sims, Vice Chancellor Dean McCleary, and CIO Diane Moen and her staff members, Peggy Sherven and Steve Hannah, for their participation throughout the day.  And we were most impressed with the discussions we had with Steve Brandt, Cameron Brauer, and Katherine Johnson.

“It is clear that your institution is making great strides in teaching using technology.  Everywhere we saw evidence of faculty who not only made use of technology themselves but were making sure that the students were using technology in a way to advance their learning and understanding.  It is clear that the faculty of UMC are using notebook computers in ways that promote student learning.  The discussions that we had with faculty throughout the day reinforced the idea that ‘high tech with high touch’ is vital if the mission of integrating technology throughout the curriculum is going to truly prepare students for successful careers.

“I must also emphasize that we were extremely pleased with the friendly atmosphere that everyone maintained throughout the visit.  At no time did we feel that the interruption of your busy schedules that day was unwelcome.  I wanted to convey the sincere thanks of myself, Bob, Dale, and Todd for the professional courtesy you extended and the excellent assistance we received.  We were very impressed by the leadership, quality and dedication of the faculty and staff at UMC.

“If we have any further questions, we will accept your offer to contact you again.  Please feel free to forward a copy of this letter, with our thanks, to the appropriate participants.”
--Dr. Daniel A. Talley, Asst Professor Economics, Dakota State University
