UMC
Work/Life Focus Group Meetings January 27, 28
This year the Office of the Vice
President for Human Resources and the Office of the Vice President and
Executive Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Personnel are examining
work/life issues on all campuses at the University of Minnesota.
Work/life refers to initiatives, programs, policies, and/or services
that support employees in meeting an organization’s mission while also
meeting their family and personal responsibilities. For example,
flexible work arrangements can give employees greater control in
managing their work and life responsibilities, and dependent care
support can ease care giving burdens for employees with children or
aging parents. Efforts such as these have been shown to increase
productivity and retention and improve morale in both higher education
and business and industry.
Anita Rios, Coordinator
for the Work/Life Initiative will be at UMC to facilitate meetings on
work/life issues. Your input and feedback is important. Please choose
one of the following focus groups and reply to Les Johnson at
ljohnson@mail.crk.umn.edu to let us know which session you will
attend.

The information and
ideas you provide from the focus groups will inform a Work/Life Steering
Committee which has been charged with developing specific
recommendations regarding ways the University might strengthen its
commitment to work/life. Refreshments will be provided at the focus
group meetings. We strongly encourage you to participate in a focus
group to share your insights on what affects your work/life balance at
the University.
Thanks in advance for
your participation in this important process. Before we get together,
please take a few minutes and think about some of the following
employer-provided supports already in place at the University: health
and wellness resources, financial planning, relocation assistance,
employee assistance counseling, career development, flexible work
options (telecommuting, part-time work) and dependent care support. We
look forward to seeing you!

Scheduling Changes
Within the next few days Jim
Myers will be making some changes to the SURE (Scheduling University
Resources Electronically) system. The resources listed under
“locations” will be broken down in greater detail. The larger, more
specified list will be labeled “filters” instead of “locations.” If you
experience problems locating all resources after the changes are made,
you may have to update your bookmark. For new users the address for
scheduling cars, meeting rooms, etc. is <www.umcrookston.edu/Facilities/sure/>.
Bookmark the address if you haven’t already.
More people are
reserving their own cars, meeting rooms, etc. each month. Everyone
should remember to cancel their reservations if they do not need to use
the resource. Please remember to fill out the mileage card before
returning vehicle keys. If there are people who have tried to use the
scheduling system and can’t get it to work, please notify Jim Myers at
ujfm002@crk.umn.edu or myself. Toward the end of the month we are
planning to send out a survey asking you to evaluate the SURE system.

Accolades
Ryan
Tripp, a junior majoring in
business management—marketing from Alexandria, MN, has been selected to
present at the Business Opportunity and Self-employment Search (BOSS).
The competition is part of the Marketplace of Ideas, North Dakota's
biggest economic development conference. This is the first year the
Marketplace event has included the BOSS competition. Ryan is one of
only eight finalists to be selected to present at the competition on
Wednesday, January 15, at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. Refer to
<www.marketplaceofideas.org>
for more information.
Ryan will present his
business plan, "Tripp Dock and Lift,” a plan based on a business he
first started in high school. He would hire friends in the Alexandria
area, and they would pull out docks and boatlifts in the fall and
install them again in the spring. He first began the business in tenth
grade and then sold it his freshman year of college. He sold the
equipment and the accounts to a friend of his. Ryan submitted his
detailed business plan to Marketplace in hopes that the same idea could
be implemented by youth in North Dakota.

Hilary Bertsch, Program Associate, Center for Adult Learning, and
Michelle Christopherson, Assistant to the Director, Center for
Agriculture and Natural Resources, have completed their Master of Arts
Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Thomas.
Bertsch and Christopherson graduated Friday, December 20, 2002 on the
St. Paul campus. Sue Jacobson, Senior Lab Services Coordinator,
Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources, has also taken part in the
degree program; she will complete her studies and graduate in January,
2003. Bertsch, Christopherson, and Jacobson began the program in
September of 2001, transferring nine credits in from the UMC Summer
Institute of Instructional Technology. They met with a cohort of 18
teachers every other Friday evening and Saturday for the last 18
months. More details about the degree program
are available at: <www.stthomas.edu/education/offcampus/egrandforksmaci.html>.
Congratulations!
