UMC Establishes a National
Chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta
In December 2002, the First Year
Honor Society submitted a petition for the establishment of a national
chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta at the University of Minnesota,
Crookston. They recently received notification that the petition was
accepted and will move forward to become official members of the
national honor society. The student organization is currently planning
an induction ceremony to be held in March. Students are eligible for
membership with Alpha Lambda Delta if they achieve a minimum of a 3.50
grade point average after their first semester or first year of
college. ALD provides scholarship, leadership, and fellowship
opportunities for students. For more information about Alpha Lambda
Delta, please visit <http://www.mercer.edu/ald/index.html>.

Web-based
Grading to Start Spring 2003
Beginning this spring semester,
faculty and instructors on all University of Minnesota campuses will
enter final grades on the Web.
Students will benefit
from the Web-based grade entry system because grades will be available
the day after faculty members submit them rather than several days
later. The University will benefit because the Web-based system is
faster, more cost effective and efficient, and less open to errors than
processing "bubble sheets".
The new system will be
available starting the Monday of the last week of instruction for both
full-term and part-term courses. Dates will vary by campus.
Instructors will log
onto the Web-based system using their x.t00 username and password. The
system will automatically display courses for which he or she is listed
in PeopleSoft as the instructor of record. The instructor will choose
the course for which grades are being entered and submit a grade for
each student. Instructors will also be able to establish a proxy in
PeopleSoft to enter their grades.

Accolades
Crookston
Student Association President Jean Korkowski had the honor of
accepting an award on behalf of all UMC students at the Crookston
Area Chamber of Commerce’s 61st Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet on
Monday, January 13. At the ceremony the UMC student body was presented
with the 2002 Chairman’s Award “For exemplifying the ‘Spirit of
Crookston’ through outstanding volunteer service to the community.” In
accepting the award Jean Korkowski acknowledged UMC students’ hard work
and dedication to strengthening the ties between the UMC and Crookston
communities.
Dave
Arscott, Research Assistant Professor, Natural Resources, attended
the 20th Annual Red River Basin Land and Water International Summit
Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba, held January 15-17. The theme of this
year’s summit was “Time for a Unified Voice.” Arscott presented “Red
River Basin Water Quality Monitoring: River Watch in Minnesota” in a
technical reports session with Wayne Goeken, Monitoring Coordinator of
the Red River Basin Monitoring Program and Molly MacGregor, Principal
Planner and Red River Basin Coordinator for the Minnesota Pollution
Control Agency. MacGregor was not able to attend in the light of recent
budget restrictions. Goeken and Arscott discussed the history, current
situation, and future plans for water quality monitoring in the basin
and presented a summary of water quality results from River Watch
activities in 2002. River Watch, initiated in 1995 by Goeken, involves
high schools in monitoring local river conditions near their
communities. In 2002, more than 30 participating schools monitored more
than 100 sites in the MN portion of the Red River Basin.
