Faculty/Staff Hosts Needed for Family Weekend
I would like to invite you and your spouse to host a table during dinner for Family Weekend on October 12.  As a host, you will have the responsibility to enjoy dinner and conversation with parents, and that is all.  This is an excellent opportunity for parents of our current students to connect with the UMC faculty and staff.

The dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. by the Hospitality Association and will include seasoned chicken breast, wild rice, vegetable, tossed salad, dinner roll, and grasshopper pie.  The meal will be provided free of charge to you and your spouse as a thank you for participating in Family Weekend.  After dinner, you will enjoy a special presentation by the UMC Music and Theater Department.

If you are interested in hosting a table, please respond and indicate whether or not your spouse or partner will attend.  Thank you in advance for your support!
--Kami Mattson, Director of First Year Experience

Final Round of 15-Passenger Van Training October 7
Effective November 1, the University of Minnesota will not allow faculty, staff or students to drive a 15-passenger van unless they have completed a safety certification course.  This new policy applies to vans owned by the University and rented from an outside source!  There will be no exceptions to this policy!  Starting November 1, UMC Facilities Management will not allow vans to be checked out unless reserved by certified drivers.

If you have driven or may be asked to drive a 15-passenger van for a class, field trip, club activity, community service or athletic event, you must complete this training.

Training will be provided by Bill Roberts, Director of UM Fleet Services.  He has an excellent training program full of important information for all drivers.

For those who were not able to attend the earlier sessions, you will have two more opportunities on October 7.  Please arrange your schedules and register for one of the following sessions:

  • October 7, 3:30 to 5 p.m., Hill 4 (notice room change!!!)

  • October 7, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Hill 4

This will probably be the last time this training is provided during the 2002-03 academic year!

Pre-registration is suggested, but not mandatory.  You can register by contacting Tom Feiro, Environmental Health & Safety at 8300 or via email at tfeiro.
--Tom Feiro, Senior Environmental Health & Safety Technician

Employee Benefits Information Session

12 noon to 1 p.m., Sahlstrom Conference Center 131

You are encouraged to attend this session so that you understand your options during this year’s open enrollment period.  Barry will make a brief presentation and will leave time to answer any questions you may have.  Feel free to bring your lunch or purchase a lunch and bring it to the meeting.

In addition, you may call Jacquie at 8346 or Les at 8345 if you would like to schedule an individual meeting with Barry on October 11 to discuss any specific retirement or benefit questions you may have.  Individual meetings will be held in the Selvig Conference Room on the third floor of Selvig Hall, room 308.

I’m Voting for the U
Your voice, united with others, can have a powerful impact on legislative support for the University.  With a state election around the corner, we are faced with the rare opportunity to impress upon the candidates for governor and the state legislature just how important supporting the University is to the state as a whole.

See the attached flyer for tips on how to get involved.  Make the University of Minnesota a Capitol priority.
--Curt Almlie, Director of University Relations

Campus Signage
The majority of the UMC campus room number signs have been placed.  We have a few places that need to have bulletin boards, or racks removed, and some patching and painting completed before the room number signs can be placed.  A work request has been submitted to Facilities Management.

The 8 ½ x 11 insert panels under the room number signs are for your Outlook schedule or office hours.  The undersized 8 ½ x 11 inch panels have been repaired by the U of M Sign Shop. If you are having problems with your sign panel, please contact me and we will get it repaired for you.

Attached is a Word document (table) that you may use to produce an Office Hours schedule insert.  You may type your schedule/office hours into the cells.  Or if you wish, you can write them in.

Please let me know if there are changes or updates needed for your name insert.  I am using information that is on record with Academic Affairs and Human Resources.  I am updating and adding teaching area to the faculty inserts.

The approved sign insert format is:

  1. Your name

  2. Academic rank for faculty and teaching area -- Position or job title for administration and staff

  3. Center or office

  4. Building name

Example:
John Jones
Associate Professor, Chemistry
Center for Learning Foundations

Dowell Hall

Thanks for all your help with this project.
--John Zak, University Relations

Teambackers LogoUMC Teambackers Membership Drive a Soaring Success
The UMC Teambackers Club completed its annual month-long membership drive on September 21, 2002.  With the conclusion of this drive the organization has grown to 280 members and raised $82,500.

Volunteers divided up into teams and went out to contact people asking for support of UMC’s athletics programs through Teambackers memberships.  The winning team receives UMC Teambackers jackets and the top individual will receive a limo ride to Grand Forks, dinner for two at Dagwood’s, and two tickets to see the UMC women’s basketball team play UND on December 20, 2002. The winning team this year was the “Maroon Mirage,” whose members brought in 40 memberships.  The members of the team include Lonn Boike, Heidi Patterson, Curt Almlie, Brent Melsa, Don Cavalier, Stacey Grunewald, Mike Curfman, and Mark Duffner.  Top individual honors go to Bill Tyrrell who brought in 13 memberships.

This membership drive concludes the volunteer effort to bring in members, but membership is still available to anyone who might be interested.  Contact Scott Oliver at 281-8421 or soliver@mail.crk.umn.edu for more info.

Conference November 9
This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, one of the truly seminal works of the 20th century.  To commemorate this event, the University of Minnesota Rochester and the Assissi Community Center are hosting a one-day, interdisciplinary conference, “Forty Years After Silent Spring:  Lessons Learned, Lessons Ignored.”

The conference presenters will discuss the historical and social context in which Carson wrote her book; the scientific, environmental and legal lessons learned and ignored; and the literary and spiritual impact of her work.  Presentations, workshops, exhibits and a panel discussion will provide a unique opportunity to re-examine the legacy of this unassuming revolutionary.

For more information on the conference, including cost, conference schedule, presenters, and registration, see the attached brochure.
