Great Conversations LogoGreat Conversations Series Continues January 20
The Great Conversations Series, produced by the U of M College of Continuing Education and broadcast to the Crookston Campus from the Twin Cities, will continue Tuesday, January 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Dowell Hall 220.  The conversation, “Nurturing the Creative Class,” will feature Robert Bruininks and Richard Florida.  The event is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.

Underscoring the importance of creativity to both community building and urban competitiveness, this conversation will reveal the latest thinking on how governments, universities, developers, and designers can work together to generate creative places and spaces.  Prior to becoming the 15th President of the University of Minnesota, Robert Bruininks was Professor and Dean of the College of Education and Human Development and the University's Provost and Executive Vice President.  He talks with Richard Florida, bestselling author of The Rise of the Creative Class.  A Professor of Regional Economic Development at Carnegie Mellon University, Florida has designated Minneapolis as having one of the nation's top ten "thriving creative classes."

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Search Update
This is an update of the VCAA search.  Importantly, the applicant list must remain confidential until finalists have been chosen, but the process is not confidential.  Recognizing that adjustments to timelines are always possible, we have envisioned the search process as follows:

The committee’s first meeting was Wednesday, December 17, 2003, and Chancellor Burton discussed his charge.

Also, the committee discussed the position announcement.  It was distributed in the latter part of December by UMC’s Human Resources office, and it will be distributed again in the latter part of January.  UMC is building the pool and, for full consideration, encouraging applicants to send materials by March 1, 2004.  An ongoing review is taking place as applicant materials arrive, and the position will be open until filled.  Please find the position announcement at UMC’s Human Resource web page:

Our next scheduled meeting is Friday, January 23, 2004.  At this meeting, we will be completing schedule templates and interview questions for the finalists’ campus visits in March.  If you have suggestions, please forward them to one of the committee members before that meeting (see list of committee members below).

March 8, 2004, the committee will choose finalists to bring to campus.  At this time, the names of finalists will be made public.

We will hold campus interviews March 22-26.  During campus interviews, we will provide ample opportunities for the entire campus community to meet each finalist and for everyone to provide input to the committee in regard to each finalist.

We will meet again Friday, April 2, to discuss and analyze the finalists’ respective qualifications, including strengths and weaknesses, and the feedback from the campus community.  Shortly thereafter, we will forward our recommendations to Chancellor Burton.  The goal is to have the new VCAA start July 1, 2004.  The initial appointment will be up to three years and annually renewable thereafter.

Carrying out a search of this scope requires time and commitment.  I very much appreciate the contributions of the following VCAA Search Committee members:

Cheryl Byrne
Ron Del Vecchio
David DeMuth
Pam Elf
Mark Huglen
Martin Lundell
Bill Peterson
Brent Sorenson
Jim Thomasson
Soo Yin-Lim-Thompson
Lyle Westrom
Cameron Brauer
Joan Ebnet
Jean Korkowski
Joe Massey
Pam Holsinger-Fuchs
Rose Koch
Bob Nelson
Judy Neppel

Sincerely,
--Mark E. Huglen, chair, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Search Committee

New Equine Breeding Program
Beginning spring semester 2004, UMC's Equine Industries Management program will offer an equine breeding program. The program begins with the arrival of two outstanding Quarter Horse stallions for the 2004 breeding season: La Beau Coosa and HVR Triple Play.  Both stallions are in the Red River Valley Futurity.

La Beau Coosa is a 16 h double-registered Incentive Fund Palomino stallion.  “Beau” has achieved his Superior in Palomino halter, and is nearing his Superior in Palomino pleasure.  Although his show career has been focused on the Palomino show circuit, he also has Quarter Horse pleasure points.  Beau arrived on campus on 12/18/03.

HVR Triple Play is a grey ROM (Register of Merit) reining stallion.  “Bandit’s” great mind complements his superior athleticism to produce the type of top performances typical of “Freckles Playboy” bred Quarter horses.  Bandit arrived at UTOC on 1/9/04.

Please stop by UTOC to visit these exceptional stallions, and feel free to pass this information on to anyone who you think may be interested.

Anyone wishing to breed to these stallions is asked to call Nicky Overgaard at 281-8127, Cheryl Byrne at 281-8111, or Ron Del Vecchio at 281-8109.

Football Recruiting Weekends
I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and fun-filled holiday season.  The New Year also brings with it the official visit season for college football recruiting.  The on-campus visit is the most critical portion of the entire process and hopefully the clinching moment in a year’s worth of effort.

The football staff is very optimistic about the student athletes with whom we have developed relationships over the past several months.  All of these students possess a tremendous amount of athletic ability, and many of them are very good students.  In most cases we are in a battle with 5 to 10 other schools.

On a typical weekend we will invite between 5 and 15 recruits and their parents on campus.  Keeping the groups small allows us to give each student plenty of attention.  We will be contacting faculty on an individual basis about specific students and their academic interests.  Please feel free to join us at any point during the day’s schedule to meet the recruits.

The official visit dates will be January 10, 17, and 24.  We will also have many students visiting unofficially throughout January and February during the weekdays.
--Shannon Stassen, UMC Head Football Coach
