Easily AmusedMusical Duo Easily Amused January 28
The pop/rock duo Easily Amused will perform at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Wednesday, January 28, at 8 p.m., in the Eagles Nest Lounge, Sahlstrom Conference Center.  The event is free and open to the general public.

Easily Amused is Renée Lamoureux and Keith Macpherson.  Hailing from Winnipeg, Canada, the two have been gradually gaining mainstream recognition since the release of their debut independent CD Novice in 2001.  Two years and 400 live performances later, Lamoureux and Macpherson have garnered Canadian Music Week’s award for Best Online Indie Artist and are poised for a much bigger breakthrough with their just-released second CD Simple Stuff.

For more information on the band, please visit <www.easilyamused.ca>.  The performance is sponsored by UMC’s S.P.A.C.E. (Student Programming and Activities for Campus Entertainment) Committee.

Family Weekend January 30-31
The First Year Experience Program will sponsor Family Weekend January 30-31.  Many events tie-in with Ag-Arama.  Family Weekend invites family members of current students to campus for a fun-filled weekend of attending classes, going to athletic events, eating some wonderful meals, enjoying free demonstrations and workshops, and, most importantly, just having fun with their son or daughter.  Please contact Rae French in the First Year Experience Office at 281-8339 for more details.  For a complete schedule, go to <www.umcrookston.edu/FYE/Parent_Programs/FamWkendJan04.pdf>.

Dedication of Public Art at Ag-Arama January 31
A special feature of Ag-Arama activities this year will be the dedication of the new public artwork located in the large entrance foyer area in the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC).  Susan Warner, a mosaic and terra cotta tile artist from Minneapolis, has created a display of painted tiles that surround the entrance to the arena.  Each tile is hand painted and represents an aspect of agriculture.

The process of developing this artwork began over ten years ago when UTOC was being designed, as a certain amount of money was set aside from the construction budget for public artwork.  A campus art committee was formed, and several proposals and models for abstract sculpture were presented.  None of the proposals was deemed suitable, and it was decided that the artwork needed to somehow represent UMC’s tie to agriculture.

At about that time Susan Warner had been commissioned by an art committee in Red Lake Falls to create two mosaic tile works for the city, and her completed work was favored by the UMC Art Committee.  She developed a proposal, which was soon accepted.  Warner is a busy artist, and she needed to fit this project in around other art projects commissioned by the City of Minneapolis.  The end result, however, is something the campus can be proud of.

The dedication for this artwork will be held in the foyer of UTOC during the Ag-Arama Awards Ceremony, which starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 31.  Warner is scheduled to attend the event.  All those attending Ag-Arama and others from the community are invited to join our UMC family at this special celebration.

Straight Talk on Tough Topics February 2
Mike Anderson and Don Christie of Northwest Mental Health Center along with UMC staff will discuss “Straight Talk on Tough Topics:  Depression Awareness and Suicide Prevention” on Monday, February 2, at 8 p.m. in the Skyberg Main Floor Lounge.

What will you learn if you attend?  You’ll leave knowing how to get help for yourself or someone else if depression or thoughts of suicide are a part of your life or the life of someone that you know or care about.  You’ll learn about the warning signs of suicide and depression.  You’ll discover that there are many kinds of effective treatments for depression, and that people do recover and feel good again.  You’ll learn what to do and what NOT to do if someone is talking about suicide.  You’ll learn that there is a lot YOU can do to get and stay healthy.  You’ll learn that everyone that is a part of a campus community is important to making it a great place to be.  Stop by and chat with real life friends and community members about something important to us all.

This event is sponsored by Residential Life, Student Health, and Counseling and Disability Services.

Interim Co-Directors Named for Center for Adult Learning
Hilary Bertsch  Michelle Christopherson
I am pleased to announce that Michelle Christopherson and Hilary Bertsch will be interim co-directors of UMC’s Center for Adult Learning (CAL) commencing January 20 and continuing until a permanent hire is made, probably by June 1, 2004.  As many of you know, Hilary has been affiliated with the Center for some time and recently completed a master's degree in education with an emphasis in instruction and curriculum, as did Michelle.  Their M.A. degrees were at the University of St. Thomas.  Michelle recently completed a stint as interim co-director of admissions.  She will continue her duties in the Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources but in a reduced capacity as we rev up and move ahead in CAL. This is a terribly important function of our campus, and I'm delighted to have the enthusiasm, expertise, and energy of Michelle and Hilary on board.

As in all the other things we do here on campus, this is a partnership, so let's all give all the assistance and support we can to Hilary and Michelle as we make UMC great!
--W. Daniel Svedarsky, interim vice-chancellor, Academic Affairs
