UMC to Take Part in Wellstone
Civic Dialogue Project February 5
UMC will be one of over 650
locations in 41 states to serve as a live video discussion site for
Wellstone Action’s Civic Dialogue Project on Thursday, February 5. The
discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in Kiehle 105. The topic of discussion
will be “Can We Dream Again?” It is intended to be a discussion about
the gap between people’s personal values and the values that are
reflected in the public arena. It addresses the cynicism and sense of
disempowerment permeating much of contemporary society. All discussions
in the Wellstone Civic Dialogue Project are led by volunteer
facilitators who have agreed to convene groups and provide an open
format for the discussion. Learn more about this project at <www.wellstone.org/network/issue_page.aspx?catID=1770>.
At UMC, the event is sponsored by the UMC Student Center.

Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
Application material for
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program projects during
Intersession (May 24 through June 30, 2004) or from July 1, 2004 through
June 15, 2005 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office. UROP
offers financial awards to full-time undergraduate students for
research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with
a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational
experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and
implementation of a project. At the same time, faculty have the
opportunity to work closely with students and receive valuable
assistance with their own research or professional activity. UROP
encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests
outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special
projects. Projects are expected to contribute to the student’s academic
development. UROP applications are judged on the quality of the
proposed project, the strength of the collaboration with the faculty
sponsor, and the educational benefit to the student. Since funding is
limited, awards are granted to the strongest proposals. The maximum
award is $1,700: stipend up to $1,400 (hourly rate is $11.50) as salary
for actual time spent working on a project (funds up to approximately
120 hours of research) and expense allowance up to $300 for supplies and
expenses required by the project. Completed applications should be
returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on March 8, 2004.
Deadline is firm; late applications will not be accepted.

Tamara
Yon, a Crookston attorney with the firm Johannson, Rust, Fagerlund,
Yon and Stock, has been named a 2004 “Rising Star” by Minnesota Law
and Politics magazine. The honor was listed in the magazine’s
December ‘03/January ’04 issue. Tamara serves as an adjunct faculty
member at UMC teaching “Legal Environment of Business.”

UMC has passed the first competitive round for consideration in a
Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary
Education (FIPSE) grant and will be asked to submit a full
proposal. Only ten percent of all applicants
generally make it to this point of being asked to submit a full
proposal. The grant is a significant one involving $484,439. A brief
abstract of UMC’s proposal: The University of Minnesota, Crookston is
proposing the development of the Academic Gaming Initiative--a gamer
generator--to train teachers to effectively use academic games to
increase learning. UMC will collaborate with community and campus
partners to offer academic games regionally in the first year while
working toward our goal of nationwide availability. The learning games
are those being collaboratively developed by UMC faculty members and
Dan Lim, director of UMC’s
Instructional Technology Center. Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, director
of UMC’s Office of Student Activities and Service Learning, and Liz
Tollefson, assistant director of development, are collaborating on
the writing of the grant.
VolunTEAM Update

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight
event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research
and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of
people will gather at the UMC Mall and take turns walking or running
laps. Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will
never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and
that one day, cancer will be eliminated. The American Cancer Society is
looking for volunteers in several capacities. Please consider forming a
team now to fundraise and walk/run in the event June 18. Set-up and
clean-up crews also are needed June 18, 19. For more information,
please contact Janet Scott at 218-945-6296, or visit <www.cancer.org>.
UMC is responsible for
delivering Meals on Wheels next week, February 9-13. Meals may be
picked up at the hospital at 11:30 a.m. Routes usually take between
30-40 minutes to complete. I hope you’ll consider helping out this very
worthwhile cause. With the weather being so cold lately, you are likely
the only people many of these folks see all day. You may sign up at the
Student Activities Information Desk in Dowell 119, or simply email me,
loege005@umn.edu, with the day you are willing to help and I will
sign you up. Thanks very much!
If you’re interested in
learning more about the Crookston VolunTEAM, please contact Lisa
Loegering in the VolunTEAM office (Dowell 112) at 281-8526 or
