Informational Session on Women and Heart Disease March 30
In conjunction with Women's History Monday, UMC Student Health will sponsor a session entitled "Empowering Women to Reduce Risk of Heart Disease" Tuesday, March 30, from noon to 1 p.m. in SCC 131.  Joan Morlan, R.N. from RiverView Health, will be on campus to provide information related to this topic.  This event in open to everyone.  Refreshments and assorted muffins will be provided. 

A few facts related to this issue:  Heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women and kills 32% of them; 43% of deaths in American women (or nearly 500,000) are caused by cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) each year; Women who smoke risk having a heart attack 19 years earlier than non-smoking women.  For those wondering why the focus on women only, please refer to the following website: <www.womenheart.org/information/women_and_heart_disease_fact_sheet.asp>. 

Urban Forestry Workshop April 2
The 20th annual Northwest Urban Forestry Workshop will be held Friday, April 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Youngquist Auditorium, Agricultural Research Center.  The workshop is cosponsored by UMC’s Natural Resources Department, the UMC Center for Adult Learning, and the University of Minnesota Forest Resources Extension.

With registration beginning at 7:30 a.m., the day-long conference will cover local urban forestry initiatives, invasive species, and urban forestry pests.  The morning’s schedule will feature three sessions:  “What it takes to grow trees to maturity: selection (for quality, not species), planting”; “Keeping trees healthy along the way: minimizing insect pest problems and diseases”; and “Update on problems to look for in 2004.”

At the noon luncheon in UMC’s Brown Dining Room this year’s Tree City USA Award presentations will be made. 

Afternoon sessions will include:  “Recognizing safe trees, recognizing risky trees” and “Keeping trees safe through maturity: minimizing decay, storm damage and maintenance damage to landscape trees.”

International Dinner April 3
The annual UMC International Dinner will take place Saturday, April 3, at 6 p.m. in Brown Dining Room.  UMC’s international students participate in this dinner, providing menu items from their respective home countries as well as entertainment for the program that follows.  Tickets are $10 per person and are available through advance sales only at the UMC Business Office in Selvig Hall, or contact Brent Melsa at 218-281-8540 or 218-281-8538.  For more information, contact Mario Prada, UMC’s Director of Multicultural and International Programs, at 218-281-8508.  Disability accommodations are available upon request and can be made by calling 218-281-8508.

Clothesline Project at UMC April 5-8
The Clothesline Project, a national art project started by women in Massachusetts as a memorial to the victims and survivors of domestic violence, will be displayed on campus in the Eagles Nest the week of April 5 through 8.  The project involves designing shirts which reflect women's personal experiences with battering, rape, sexual assault, incest, child abuse, and prostitution.  The shirts then are hung on a clothesline and displayed in a public location.  The purpose is to create a visual memorial to the casualties and survivors of domestic violence.  To learn more about the Clothesline Project and the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women go to the following website <www.mcbw.org>.

Blood Drive April 6
The spring blood drive for UMC is scheduled for Tuesday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.  The Anatomy & Physiology class members will be in the Sahlstrom Conference Center entrance the week of March 29-April 2 soliciting the names of those individuals wishing to sign up.  Blood banks are critically short right now, and your support of this event is vital to the lives of others.  Please call Stacey Grunewald, 8512 with any questions.  Thank you.

College Fair for Faculty and Staff and Their Students April 12
Everyone is invited to the first semi-annual college fair for UMC faculty, staff, and their dependent middle and high school students.  The event will take place Monday, April 12, from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center.  This is an opportunity to make sure that the Office of Admissions is effectively communicating with your students.

We’ll have representatives at various tables from Admissions & Financial Aid, the current academic centers, Student Activities, First Year Experience, and Athletics.

It’s an opportunity for you to get to know the staff of the Office of Admissions, to eat lunch in Brown Dining Room with your student, and to give your student an opportunity to learn about UMC.  Lunch is FREE for your students.

Employee Benefits Counselor at UMC April 22
Susan Smith, University of Minnesota benefits counselor, will be on the UMC campus Thursday, April 22, to help employees with retirement planning and answer questions regarding your U-Plan benefits package.

If you are considering retirement within the next twelve months, you are encouraged to make an appointment to visit with the benefits counselor.  You may call Jacquie at 8346 or Les at 8345 to schedule a confidential individual meeting with Susan on April 22 to discuss any specific retirement or benefit questions you may have.  Individual meetings will be held in the Selvig Conference Room located on the third floor of Selvig Hall (Room 308).

Student Employment Pay Rate Raised
Good news for student employees!  The UMC Executive Committee approved an increase in the base student employment wage from $6.75 to $7.00 per hour, effective with the pay period in which July 1, 2004 falls.

Staff Updates
Mary Gjerness Myers, Ph.D. has been hired to serve as director of the UMC College in the High School Program.  She will begin her responsibilities Wednesday, March 31.  For the time being, her office will be located in 208 Selvig Hall.

Her responsibilities will be to promote the College in the High School program by visiting school districts and answer questions of those who have an interest in the program; coordinate on-campus activities for students enrolled in the College in the High School Program with the Admissions Office; organize a yearly, on-campus event for faculty, high school coordinators and school administrative staff regarding policies and activities of the College in the High School program; coordinate UMC faculty review of high school faculty credentials and course syllabi, under the direction of the vice chancellor for academic affairs; assist the Admissions Office with registration of students from participating school districts; develop appropriate systems to monitor and report program effectiveness and success; and perform the function of key contact person for UMC’s College in the High School Program.

Mary was most recently employed as the youth development coordinator for the Morris, Minnesota, Area School District, where she led a local youth initiative by promoting youth development, organizing school and community events, developing collaborative relationships with partners, conducting workshops, and developing/implementing various youth programs for the local schools and community.  She also managed marketing for the youth initiative and co-authored four funded grants for over $90,000.  Prior to moving to Minnesota, she was an assistant professor and adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, and a lecturer in the Department of Education at Gwynedd-Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, PA. 

She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon, Eugene, OR; and her B.S. in psychology from University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Vanessa Armstrong
, a UMC student from Fisher, MN, will represent UMC as a student panelist for the Student Views of Technology Enhanced Learning Seminar.  The panel discussion, hosted by the University of Minnesota Digital Media Center, will take place Tuesday, March 30, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Walter Library on the Twin Cities Campus.  Learn more at <dmc.umn.edu/spotlight/student-views.shtml>.

VolunTEAM Update

The Development Office will be hosting a morning and an afternoon tea, Friday, April 23.  They are looking for one club to provide 6-8 volunteers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to clear tables, wash dishes, and prepare the tables for the afternoon tea.  Volunteers from a second club are needed to clear tables and wash dishes following the afternoon tea from 3 to 5 p.m.  If you are an advisor of a club still needing to do community service activities in order to receive funding and are interested in this activity, please e-mail Lisa Loegering loege005@umn.edu.
