Wellness Walk Kick-off April 20
We all know how important exercise is, and if you are like many of us, you find it difficult to get motivated.  As part of the Wellness Program which the University plans to kick-off soon, we’d like to invite you to join us at noon on Tuesday, April 20, in the Kiehle Rotunda for a walk on campus.

We’ll hand out bottled water, a map giving routes and distances to get you started, and ask that you sign up for the walk at that time.  Walking is a low-impact form of exercise with little expense involved.

As part of the Wellness Program the university plans the following events:

April 20 – postcards should arrive at the homes of employees
April 26 – letter from President Robert Bruininks with a pedometer in campus mailboxes
April 30 – letter from the Wellness Program with “Trek Across the U” materials in campus mailboxes

We’re sure you are all interested in a healthy life style, so let’s get started!

Early Childhood Carnival Set for Tuesday, April 20
Members of the UMC Early Childhood Club will take part in the Seventh Annual Parent-Child Carnival on Tuesday, April 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary School in Crookston.  The event coincides with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Week of the Young Child.  The carnival is free and open to families in the Crookston community and to all children of UMC students, faculty, and staff.

The theme of the carnival will be “Lost in Storybook Land” and will focus on early childhood literacy.  Along with other local groups, students majoring in Early Childhood Education at UMC have planned different concurrent activities based on the theme so children can take part in hands-on learning activities.  These activities are appropriate for children ages six months to 8 years of age.  Information about each activity will be posted at each station for parents.

This year’s expanded event is cosponsored by the UMC Early Childhood Club, Cathedral School, Crookston Childcare Association, Crookston Park and Recreation, Crookston Public Library, Early Childhood Family Education, Crookston Head Start, Parents Helping Parents, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Sunrise Center, and UMC VolunTEAM.  For more information, contact Connie Camrud at UMC’s Early Childhood Development Center, 218-281-8285.

Rothenberger to Discuss the Psychology of Intoxication April 21
James Rothenberger, MPH and Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Instructor at the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health, will present "The Psychology of Intoxication:  Why Getting High is Necessary" on Wednesday, April 21, at 8 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium.  This event is free and open to the public.  It is sponsored by UMC’s Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) Awareness Program.

Earth Day Poster Contest April 22
Earth Day Collage
Earth Day will be celebrated nationally on Thursday, April 22.  To commemorate the day, the UMC Concerts & Lectures Committee will sponsor a student poster session.  Poster set-up will take place in the Eagles Nest in Sahlstrom Conference Center at 11:30 a.m., and judging will begin at noon, continuing for approximately one hour.

Students who have specific interests in topics which are of an environmental concern are invited to prepare a short report in the form of poster.  Possible topics include sustainable energy sources such as wind or biomass, waste reduction and recycling, water quality, habitat restoration, eco-friendly farming techniques, threatened plant/animal species or topics related to the human impact on the environment. Students are not restricted to these topics and are encourages to be creative.

Prizes of $75, $50, and $25 (for redemption at the Campus Bookstore) will be awarded to the student or group of students for first, second and third places, respectively.  Projects will be judged on content, creativity, professional display and the student's ability to verbally communicate their ideas.   For more information, go to <http://ray.crk.umn.edu/earthday/>.

Satellite Downlink on Making Online Teaching and Learning Accessible April 22
UMC’s Office for Students with Disabilities will sponsor "Untangling the Web: Making Online Teaching and Learning Accessible,” a live satellite teleconference downlink, on Thursday, April 22.  The 90-minute live event will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Brown Dining Room A of Sahlstrom Conference Center.  The event is free and open to all interested individuals.

Program Description:  Faculty members teaching online often find themselves unsure about the best way to help students who have identified accessibility problems in their courses.  Many disability support providers are ill-equipped to resolve these problems, and may pass them on to academic computing staff, who struggle to integrate them into their regular work.  Faculty and staff need to work together successfully to address accessibility problems in the online environment.  Colleges and universities must begin to think about accessibility plans for online courses and services that will serve the needs of all students.

This moderated panel discussion considers the implications of accessibility for online education and suggests ways that faculty and staff can work together to address major challenges.

The program is structured in three parts:

  • Realities, which explains problems that students with disabilities commonly encounter in online courses as well as problems faculty and staff encounter in trying to help them

  • Challenges, discussing complex barriers to online accessibility that faculty and staff working together will be unable to resolve without outside intervention

  • Progress, which focuses on reframing accessibility so that the focus for faculty and staff is on the environment rather than on individual students.

Ryan Owens  Doug Knowlton
UMC student Ryan Owens will present a poster at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Indianapolis, IN, on Friday, April 16.   He will present a poster, “The Impact of Computer Mediated Learning Module on Student Retention,” detailing the research project he completed with Doug Knowlton, former UMC vice chancellor for academic affairs.  The project aimed to determine whether an increase in retention of class material in a psychology class would be produced by creating a learning module that could be accessible via the World Wide Web.  The learning module is a Macromedia Flash software game, generated dynamically from a database.  There was significant difference between results indicating that students increased retention on lecture material included in the learning module, as compared to material not included in the learning module, supporting the assertion that computer mediated learning creates a positive impact on learning.  NCUR Participants are expected to come from over 400 colleges and universities representing almost every state in the nation.
