Student Center
Update
Excellent progress continues to
be made on the Student Center construction project. Favorable weather
conditions have allowed construction to proceed unhindered and the
project is ahead of schedule.
Continuing site work
includes pouring of interior pads, piers, foundations, and floor slab;
backfill; masonry block walls; with steel beams to be set beginning the
week of May 10.
Monday, May 10, the
sidewalk immediately south of the site will be fenced off and
pedestrian traffic routed
across the street to the mall. A temporary boardwalk
will be constructed on the north-east corner of the mall providing
access from the Conference Center to Hill-Selvig. The sidewalk on the
west side of Hill will remain open to the Atrium.
The mall street area,
from approximately the east side of the Conference Center to the visitor
parking area in front of Selvig, will be designated as "No
Parking."
Beginning
Monday, May 17,
Sahlstrom Conference Center 131
will be closed due to construction.
Also, beginning
Monday, May 17, work
will begin on the second story walkway connection between the new
Student Center and Owen Hall. During the initial 4-6 weeks of
construction there will be no access to the One Stop main entrance via
the corridor (facing south) that connects Owen-Hill-Atrium. Every
effort will be made to expedite this part of the construction project in
order to insure full access for the fall semester. Partial access will
be restored as soon as the construction has proceeded to a point
where the safety of staff and guests can be assured.
All
access to the OneStop (registration,
admissions, financial aid, student support services, academic assistance
center, counseling & career services, disability services) will be
through the north parking lot A
entrance.
Access to restrooms will temporarily be through the east entrance to
AURI.
The second floor
entrance from the One Stop to Owen Hall will be kept open as long as
possible.
You can keep up with
the progress by checking the two Student Center web cams at: <www.umcrookston.edu/technology/webtech/cameras.htm>.

Marvin
Windows and Doors Graduation Ceremony May 11
Four students who are employees
at Marvin Windows and Doors in Warroad, Minnesota, will graduate from
UMC’s on-site Bachelor of Manufacturing Management (BMM) program on
Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. Ceremonies will be held at Warroad High
School. The graduates include Tyler Baker, Roxann Crawford, Patrick
Rourk, and Brad Woodward. A group representing UMC will attend the
ceremonies. During the ceremonies, nineteen other employees will
receive their associate’s degrees from Northwest Technical College (NTC).
Marvin’s unique
educational partnership with NTC and UMC, the first of its kind in the
state of Minnesota, enables its employees to pursue associates and
bachelors degrees on site at Marvin’s corporate headquarters in
Warroad. Faculty members from NTC and UMC travel to Warroad two days a
week to teach three- and four-credit courses in a variety of subjects.

Great
Conversations Series Concludes May 11

The Great Conversations Series, produced by the U of M College of
Continuing Education and broadcast to the Crookston Campus from the Twin
Cities, will conclude its spring series Tuesday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. in
Dowell Hall 220. The conversation “Populism in the Heartland” will
feature Catherine Liu and Thomas Frank. The event is free and open to
the public.
The pulse of Midwestern
art, politics, and culture derives from a longstanding history of
populist dissent and reaction to trends originating from the East and
West coasts. But what if the Heartland's claim to authenticity is based
upon a rejection of secularism? Join two astute social critics as they
ask the controversial question, "Can populism and democracy continue to
be compatible in an age of evangelism?" Catherine Liu, U of M Professor
of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, is a prolific author of
fiction and nonfiction. Her most recent book, Suicide of an
Assistant Professor, is a comic novel about professional suicide in
academia. Thomas Frank is Editor-in-Chief of the cultural criticism
journal The Baffler. He is also the author of numerous books
including The Conquest of Cool: Business Culture,
Counterculture and the Rise of Hip Consumerism.
Learn more about the
series at <www.cce.umn.edu/conversations/index.shtml>.
The series is sponsored on the UMC campus by the Concerts and Lectures
Committee.
Macromedia Breeze Training May 14
I was impressed by what I've seen
recently implemented in several universities including the UND School of
Medicine. Macromedia Breeze seems to be the answer to several problems
in distance learning and communications. The good news is that TC
campus has piloted the Breeze server since last fall. I tested it
during the past few weeks and it looked good. By Fall 2004, all U of M
faculty and staff will be able to use Breeze through X.500 login.
Breeze is currently the buzzword in higher education and the training
industry.
We are bringing an OIT
staff/trainer from the TC campus to conduct a half-day session on
Macromedia Breeze on Friday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. As Breeze
will benefit both faculty and staff (streaming PowerPoints,
conducting online meetings, and creating training materials), this event
will be co-sponsored by UMC Human Resource Department.
As the TC campus does
charge by the number of participants, we are currently looking for 10-12
faculty and staff to participate in the first round of Breeze training.
The workshop will be held in the ITC. Each participant will be given an
account and it will be a hands-on workshop. Here are some benefits of
using Macromedia Breeze:
1) Stream large
PowerPoint files (with audio and high resolution images) over modems.
2) Insert Flash movies into online PowerPoints - great feature for Flash
users.
3) Conduct web meetings with distance learners or colleagues from other
institutions.
4) Create online training materials for distance learners or staff
development.
5) Incorporate multimedia presentations and real-time interactions into
WebCT.
If you plan to attend
the Breeze Workshop on May 14 from 9-12, please e-mail me. We will sign
up the first 12 faculty and staff. If more funding is available,
we will include more participants.

Students Plant 4,000
Trees

Students involved with the
UMC Natural Resources Club planted 4,000 jack pine
seedlings on the Deer River District of the Chippewa National Forest
during their annual tree planting trip April 29-May 2. In addition,
they removed about 4,000 budcaps from white pine seedlings that they'd
placed on several plantations last fall to protect the seedlings from
nibbling deer.
UMC Students Take Top Honors
at NACTA Competition

UMC students placed first in the senior division of the annual National
Judging Competition of the North American Colleges and Teachers of
Agriculture (NACTA), held April 22-24. UMC teams traveled to Black Hawk
College’s East Campus in Kewanee, Illinois, where they earned the
overall NACTA Sweepstakes Trophy among several other awards. UMC has
brought home the overall sweepstakes trophy nine times in the last ten
years.
NACTA’s senior division
was comprised of nearly 20 colleges and universities from across the
United States. A total of 34 two-year and four-year colleges competed
in numerous contests that were part of this year’s
competition. UMC students participated in the following NACTA
contests: Knowledge Bowl, Crops, Livestock, Soils, Horse, Agriculture
Business Management, and Dairy. Dave Hoff, assistant professor of
agricultural business, was the NACTA coordinator for UMC's teams.
UMC Athletics Department
Receives NCAA Grant
UMC has been awarded a grant from
the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II
Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Enhancement Program. The grant will
sponsor the hiring of an assistant athletics director/senior woman
administrator in a matching program that will provide 75% salary and
benefits the first year, 50% the second, and 25% the third. UMC will be
called on to provide the balance in those years and to fund the position
fully in years four and five. UMC’s Stephanie Helgeson, director,
Athletics, and Liz Tollefson, assistant director, Development,
co-authored the grant proposal. The NCAA program funding the grant has
made a priority to enhance the ethnic and gender representation in all
facets of Division II athletics administration, and in the award letter,
mentioned that the selection committee felt that UMC, as evident through
the grant proposal, had demonstrated a commitment to that priority as
well.
2004-2005
Ambassadors
Please join us in congratulating the following
students, who were selected to serve as UMC Ambassadors for 2004-2005.
We are extremely excited to work with these students and strongly
believe that they will represent our campus in a very positive manner.

Accolades
Two UMC staff members have
submitted proposals and have been awarded $5,000 grants from the U of M
Academy of Distinguished Teachers (ADT) through its Teaching and
Learning Development Grant Program. Congratulations to both!

A Summer Faculty Service-Learning Workshop, proposed by Lisa
Loegering, assistant director, Service Learning, will be offered for
new faculty and for faculty who want to initiate or improve a
service-learning project in their course(s). During the 10-hour summer
workshop, instructors will identify a community need, develop ideas
about their own projects, and begin collaboration with community
partners. Five service-learning luncheons will then be held throughout
the 2004-2005 academic year to discuss current projects.
The Ag Science
Outreach Program, proposed by Michelle Christopherson,
assistant to the director, Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources,
will expand into additional high
schools and provide more students with learning opportunities. The
project encourages young people to consider further study and careers in
the agriculture industry. The project also creates collaboration
between participating schools for innovative teaching and learning to
create a model that is transferable to other regions of Minnesota.

ADT Grant Program go to <www.adt.umn.edu/grant.htm>.

Marv Bachmeier, former UMC director of athletics, was named the UMC
Teambacker of the Year at UMC Teambackers Fun Night on Friday, April
30. Marv is credited with starting UMC Teambackers Fun Night nine years
ago and with developing the UMC Teambackers Golf Tournament—two of the
biggest fundraisers for the UMC Teambackers. He also currently serves
in an advisory role to UMC’s Athletics Department.
