New URL Listing for UMC Website
The UMC Image & Marketing Committee (IMC), at its August 1, 2003, meeting, unanimously approved a decision regarding the preferred URL listing for UMC's website.  The IMC has also received concurring support on that decision from the UMC Executive Committee.

Staff in UMC's Center for Technology Support have secured <www.UMCrookston.edu>for use by UMC.  The IMC unanimously supports the move to henceforth replace the current URL, <www.umcrookston.edu>, with <www.UMCrookston.edu> on all marketing materials.  The IMC believes that the new URL is easier to understand and to convey to the public and to prospective students.

Please note that the URL is NOT case sensitive and that <www.umcrookston.edu> will also work, but the preferred listing with the capital letters on UMCrookston  reinforces our being know also as UMC.

The IMC noted that there will be a transition period (while current materials are replaced and while websites are updated) when both URLs may appear in the public eye.  This is acceptable, since the current URL, www.umcrookston.edu, will ALWAYS continue to work.

We ask faculty and staff to begin using the new www.UMCrookston.edu URL on their new and updated materials whenever/wherever they list UMC's main website.

Note:  this change DOES NOT affect e-mail addresses.

Thank you.
--Andrew M. Svec, Director of Communications

Business Office Thanks and Welcomes
As many of you know, this summer has been one of transition in the Finance area.  After 31, 28 and 32 years of service, respectively, Betty Murphy, Gail Hasbrouck and Bonnie Anderson have retired (or are in the process of retiring).  Together, these three ladies have been the backbone of the Business Affairs Office for as long as most of us can remember.  Their dedication and outstanding level of service has been unparalleled, and we will long remember the gifts of harmony and humor they have given each day over the years.

While this transition marks the end of an era, it also marks the beginning of a new one.  As a group, we have spent much time consulting with members of the campus community and have restructured to serve you better.

Organizationally, we recognize an increased need for financial analysis to inform decision making; for administrative / procedural efficiency to assist you in migrating through significant purchase / legal decisions; and for depth to support generation of new revenue opportunities—whether new academic programs or sponsored project growth.  Technological advances have permitted additional staff efficiencies in the areas of cashiering and payroll and will enable at least some level of these services to be provided without increasing staff.

In support of the new services, we are pleased to announce the following organizational changes.

  1. The promotion of Renee Mulcahy to Principal Accounts Specialist / Supervisor, effective July 1, 2003.  Over the past three years as Accountant, Renee has taken on increasingly responsible roles in serving our students and in implementing the PeopleSoft Business Office technology, in addition to providing key leadership and continuity during the transitions of the past year.  This promotion recognizes the significance of those contributions.  Renee holds a BS in Business Education from MSU Moorhead.  In this new assignment, she will be responsible for all activities related to the revenue side of UMC’s business and will supervise Karen Murphy in the cashier position.
  1. The appointment of Donna Stainbrook-Larson to Accountant in the Business Office effective July 14, 2003.  Donna joins UMC from the NW MN Health Care Purchasing Alliance and brings more than 10 years of experience at two Federal Reserve Banks, in Minneapolis and Seattle.  She holds a BS in Business Management from UMC.  Donna will be responsible for all activities related to the expense side of UMC’s business, and will supervise the UMC Post Office.
  1. The appointment of Tricia Sanders to Accountant in the Business Office effective July 21, 2003.  Tricia’s Bachelor of Accounting degree from UND, together with more than three years’ experience as the Accounting Manager at Norby’s Work Perks in Grand Forks, will prepare her well to provide general accounting support to the revenue side (through summer and early fall cashier support), the expense side (travel compliance audit) and the fiscal side (academic program profitability and budget support).
  1. The appointment of a Financial Analyst in the budget office will be announced soon.

Please join me in welcoming Tricia and Donna to UMC, and in recognizing Renee’s tremendous accomplishments.  You are invited to stop by the Business Office, 121 Selvig, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2003, to congratulate Renee on her promotion, and to welcome both Donna and Tricia to UMC.

Finally, special thanks to Dave Crawford, Steph Helgeson, Les Johnson, Sue Kreager, Renee Mulcahy, Karen Murphy, Richard Nelson, Judy Neppel, Jacquie Normandin and Heidi Patterson for their active participation in the recruitment and interviewing effort.  And thanks to each of you for sharing ideas about our services and structure, and especially for your patience and ongoing suggestions as we migrate through this exciting time of transition.
--Rose Koch, Vice Chancellor for Finance

Seeking UMC Memorabilia for Eagles Nest
UMC will soon be redecorating a student lounge and meeting area on campus.  The area is located in Sahlstrom Conference Center and will be called the Eagles Nest (formerly Morsels). We are looking for memorabilia such as pennants, old homecoming buttons, or other items—things that would be of interest to students and that give some sense of the many past events and activities that have occurred on our campus.  If you, our faculty, staff, or alumni, have items showcasing the traditions and heritage of our campus that you would like to share, please send them to the attention of Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, director of student activities and service learning, 2900 University Ave., Crookston, MN 56716.  If you have questions about items please call at 218-281-8505.  Items will not be able to be returned.

Thank You
Thank you to everyone who attended the visitation and funeral services for Susan.  Also, thanks to all who have given memorials and flowers.
