UMC
Catering Guidelines
UMC Dining Services is committed
to providing quality food products and services at reasonable prices to
the campus community. Campus policy holds that UMC Dining Services has
exclusive primary catering and concessions rights on the campus. This
means any food or beverage served on campus at events, meetings, or
other organizational functions (excluding individual students’ residence
hall rooms) should be scheduled though UMC Dining Services.
This policy enables the
University to provide educational and employment opportunities to staff
and students and to insure that state safety and food handling
requirements are met. The policy also helps track the food and beverage
needs of the campus for appropriate planning purposes.
Last Minute Issues
Often food and beverages can be a last minute consideration or even
an afterthought. In instances where event planners need last minute
assistance, we encourage them to contact Brent Melsa, Director of Dining
Services, at 281-8538 or Angelika Huglen, Senior Administrative
Specialist for Dining Services, at 281-8540. We can often provide the
food and beverage items needed, and if not, we can direct you to
appropriate off-campus vendors.
Dining Services
appreciates the patronage of campus departments and organizations. Our
goals are to assist you in your event planning and to provide the
quality food products and services the campus community needs.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Program (UROP)
Application
material for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program projects from
January 1, 2004 through June 15, 2004 is now available in the Academic
Affairs Office. UROP offers financial awards to full-time undergraduate
students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in
partnership with a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the
unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on
the design and implementation of a project. At the same time, faculty
have the opportunity to work closely with students and receive valuable
assistance with their own research or professional activity. UROP
encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests
outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special
projects. UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed
project and the educational benefit to the student. Copies of UROP
proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve
in the library. The maximum award is $1,700 – stipend up to $1,400
(hourly rate is $10.84) and expense allowance up to $300. Completed
applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30
p.m. on October 6, 2003. Late applications will not be accepted.
