Ag
Activities Day December 5
I want to remind you that we have
Ag Activities Day approaching Friday, December 5. Contests begin as
early as 7:30 a.m. and we are looking at hosting about 900+ high school
students for these contests. If you have questions don’t hesitate to
ask, but for more information please feel free to check out the
website: <www.UMCrookston.edu/ag/AAD/>.
We have added a new
contest “Hipology.” Hipology is the study of horses; the contest will
involve basic horse knowledge, such as anatomy, health, diseases,
breeds, etc. We will be using the references that are established on
the Minnesota 4-H horse program website, so it will be the same study
material as a 4-H test.

Public
Health 1003 Offering
Starting spring semester 2004 we
will be offering a one-credit WebCT course Public Health 1003 “Alcohol
and Student Life” in cooperation with Dr. Jim Rothenberger and the
University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. I will serve as the TA for
the course on our campus. We are in the process of receiving approval
for this class to fit into our GenEd course work, however, this course
is applicable for all students in any current major and soon to be new
majors offered on our campus. This is a great opportunity for your
advisees, our student/athletes, and our First Year Experience students
to pick up a worthwhile practical one credit class. Any questions
please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Where does this class
fit? Practically everywhere in today’s society. We want to develop
responsible graduates who can perform viable tasks and be positive
contributors to their communities. We want to develop a safe learning
environment, one that can attract quality students. We have a
responsibility to meet the needs of this university community.
Thank you for your time
and consideration.

Improved
Course Search Available on the Web
An improved and expanded course
search capability debuts this fall on the Class Schedule website: <onestop2.umn.edu/courseinfo/searchcriteria.jsp?institution=UMNCR>.
The new design and features are the first phase of a project of the
Office of the UM Twin Cities Enrolled Student Services that will add
value to student services and improve registration tools.
Users will notice that
search response time is faster. They will also be able to see a
real-time report of the number of course seats available, a printable
registrations worksheet, and course details from the Class Schedule.
New types of searches
are available:
Existing searches are
improved:
-
courses scheduled
after 4:30
-
quick search by
course number
-
links to Web versions
of the class schedule, section status, and registration.

Cheryl
Byrne has joined the UMC faculty as an assistant professor in the Equine
Industries Management Program. She will begin teaching in January with

"Equine Exercise Physiology," and "Equine Reproduction Lab." She will
also work with the donations component of the Equine Industries
Management Program. Byrne will receive her Ph.D. in reproductive

Accolades
UMC’s Service-Learning Center,
including collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, the Retired Senior
Volunteer Program, and the VolunTEAM program, has been selected as a
2004 Minnesota Carter Partnership Award Finalist. UMC’s program is one
of six to move to finalist status. The others include the Careership
Program (Local Initiatives Support Corporation and Metropolitan State
University); the Cedar Riverside Community School and Augsburg College
Partnership; Family Investment Center and Hibbing Community College;
Grant Community School Collaborative and College of St. Scholastica; and
the Health Careers Institute (the Phillips Partnership and Minneapolis
Community and Technical College). The Minnesota Carter Partnership
Award winner will be announced at an award ceremony on February 21,
2004. Before announcing the winner that evening, a short video clip of
each finalist’s program will be shown to an expected audience of 500
Minnesota business, education, community, and government leaders. Learn
more about the award visit <www.kairospublishing.org/mcc/carteraward/>.
The
Crookston Collegiate FFA chapter traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to
attend the 76th National FFA Convention. Ashley Bell, Shell
Franks, Jonathon Gorentz, and Brent Arndt, all received their American
Degrees. The American FFA Degree is the highest degree a member can
attain, and only about one half of one percent of the total national
membership of the organization attains this high honor. Lyle Westrom,
chapter advisor and UMC associate professor, received the Honorary
American Degree at the convention. Another UMC student, Dustin Heitkamp
received his American Degree and obtained a National Dairy Proficiency
Award. Congratulations to all on their accomplishments.
VolunTEAM
Update

Several student clubs and organizations have expressed disappointment
that construction won’t begin on the next Habitat house until next April
or May. Well, Options for Independent Living (an organization whose goal
is to provide disabled citizens as normal a life as possible), has a
similar need for those who feel like pounding some nails for a good
cause. There are two Options clients, one in Crookston and one in Euclid
(13 miles north of town on Highway 75), who need access ramps assembled
that go from their front door to the sidewalk. They come in kits, and
the sections need to be assembled. Options is seeking at least four
volunteers, and they say assembling one will take a full day. A
carpenter will be on-site to supervise. Options has recently utilized
inmates from the Thief River Falls jail through the Sentence to Serve
program, but the STS people are going to be doing indoor projects in the
winter. This could really be a meaningful community service project for
a club that has an interest in helping agencies like Habitat for
Humanity.

likes working with children and elderly people, the Early Childhood
Family Education program in Crookston is hosting its annual
Grandparents’ Night on Monday, Nov. 24 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Lincoln
School. They are looking for volunteers to help at the various activity
stations in the gym. Contact Sandy Peterson at 281-2159 or
