Weekly
Bulletin on Hiatus until January 14
This
edition—the Wednesday, December 10, edition—of the UMC Weekly Bulletin
will be the final edition for fall semester.
The UMC Weekly Bulletin will not be sent during the semester break,
but will resume publication on the first Wednesday of spring semester,
Wednesday, January 14, 2004. Happy holidays!
Updates
to S.U.R.E. Scheduling System This Week
Facilities Management and UMC
Computing Services will be making upgrades to the online S.U.R.E.
Scheduling System this week. The hope is that these upgrades will not
interfere with your ability to schedule events using the system. When
complete, the system will feature a new look with added features, but
the basic functioning and scheduling should not require further
training. Thank you for your patience.

Leadership Conference December 10
“Students Today, Leaders
Tomorrow,” the annual leadership conference sponsored by SIFE and the
CSA, will be held Wednesday, December 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in 207
Dowell Hall. Conference topics and session offerings include: Effective
Communication, Leadership and Motivation, Conflict Resolution, Problem
Solving and Decision Making, Team Development and Diversity, and
Managing Time and Career. This event is free and open to all interested
students, faculty, and staff. Contact Eric Burgess for more

Senske
Recognized December 10
Gary
Senske, former head men’s basketball coach, will be recognized for his
contributions to UMC on Wednesday, December 10. He will be honored at a
presentation during halftime at the men’s basketball game that evening
and at a social at the Crookston Eagles (105 S. Broadway) following the
game at 9 p.m. Senske was UMC’s head men’s basketball coach for 21
years, from 1981 to 2002. In 35 years of head coaching Senske won 401
games, 225 of those at UMC.
Senske began his head
coaching career at Underwood High School in 1967-1972. He coached at
Eveleth High School From 1972-1981 before coming to UMC. His high
school teams compiled six conference titles, four sub-district titles,
two district titles, one regional runner-up, and school records for most
wins and fewest losses in a season at both Underwood and Eveleth. At
UMC his NJCAA teams compiled 176 wins against 117 losses for a 61%
win-loss record that included 12 consecutive winning seasons, a division
championship, four division runners-up, a State Championship, and a
Region XIII runner-up title.
Gary received his B.S.
from Minnesota State University, Moorhead in business-HPER and his M.S.
from St. Cloud State University in health promotion and wellness
education. He and his wife Carol currently reside in Perham, MN.

Holiday Meal
December 11
Dining Services will serve its
December holiday meal Thursday, December 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30
p.m. in Brown Dining Room, Sahlstrom Conference Center. Cost is $6 plus
tax. The menu will consist of the following: roast turkey, baron of
pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberries, green beans,
dinner rolls, garden salad, assorted fruit pies, cheesecake, and bread
pudding. Please join us!

Northwind Crossing Celtic Concert December 13

Northwind Crossing, a quintet of northern Minnesota musicians drawn
together by their common love for performing traditional Celtic music,
will perform a concert at UMC on Saturday, December 13, at 7 p.m. in
Kiehle Auditorium. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for students, and
only $2 for UMC students with their UCard student I.D. (through special
arrangement with UMC’s Concerts and Lectures Committee).
Northwind Crossing was formed in 1999 and
has performed throughout northern Minnesota at theaters, clubs, resorts,
conventions, trade shows, ethnic and community celebrations, county
fairs, coffeehouses, churches, weddings, and parties.
The performance will include
Irish step dancing by Gail Johnson of Fergus Falls, who studied
Appalachian clogging under Vicki Moss of the Old Town School of Folk
Music in Chicago and Irish step dancing from Barb McNulty of the McNulty
Irish Dancers of Park Ridge, IL.

UMC Chamber Choir Concert December 14
The
UMC Chamber Choir will perform Sunday, December 14, at 2 p.m. in Kiehle
Auditorium, with refreshments following in the Kiehle Rotunda. The
group of twelve students will perform under the direction of student
Carrie Koplin of Campbell, Minnesota. The performance will also feature
a holiday reading by members of UMC’s Cooperative Campus Ministry.
Soybean College December 18
University of
Minnesota Extension Service, the Northwest Research and Outreach Center
(NWROC), the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), and the Minnesota
Soybean Research and Promotion Council will cosponsor Soybean College on
Thursday, December 18, on the UMC campus. Soybean College is an
in-depth, hands-on workshop designed for soybean producers featuring top
extension and research specialists from the University of Minnesota and
North Dakota State University.
This day-long workshop
is designed to provide participants with the latest applied information
for use in soybean management.
The
workshop begins with registration from 8 to 8:30 a.m. at Owen Hall, room
180. The event is free to interested current UMC students and $20 for
others with pre-registration, $25 at the door.
Registration includes: all course materials and a publications
package. Concurrent information sessions will address current topics,
and hands-on laboratories will be used to demonstrate plant staging,
root health management and weedy plant diversity.

Music
Minor Concert December 18
UMC students working toward a minor in music and
others will offer a concert
on Thursday, December 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Kiehle
Auditorium. Students performing include Vanessa Armstrong of Fisher,
Matt Bower of Oakhurst, CA, Chanel Myers of Crookston, and Tom Lindo of
Mequon, WI. The concert is free and open to the public.
Campus-Wide Holiday
Celebration and Potluck December 22
The annual campus-wide Holiday Celebration and
Potluck get-together will be held Monday, December 22, from 11:30 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. in Brown Dining Room of Sahlstrom Conference Center. All
members of the campus community—UMC, NWROC, Extension, NGP, VTP, RSVP,
and all others—and their spouses are invited to attend. Attendees can
bring any food items they would like for the pot luck. Nonperishable
food items will also be collected for the local food bank.
The event will also
feature the traditional White Elephant Gift Exchange. Anyone who would
like to participate should bring a wrapped gift of “garage sale
quality.”
UMC
Bookstore Holiday Closing
The UMC Bookstore will be closed
December 24-January 2 for the holidays. They will resume their regular
8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday schedule beginning January 5.
Great
Conversations Series Continues Spring
Semester
The Great Conversations Series,
produced by the U of M College of Continuing Education and broadcast to
the Crookston Campus from the Twin Cities, will continue spring semester
2004. The discussion will feature prominent researchers discussing
issues of the moment. UMC will again serve as a host site. More
information on location will be forthcoming.

Information/ Announcement
Printed copies of the applications
for the scholarships listed above are now available from Claudia Barton
and Marcia Walker. Applicants must be 28 years or older by the
application deadline of April 4, 2004, be returning to school after a 5
year or longer break in seeking college or postsecondary education,
admitted or admissible to a degree granting or credit certificate
program at any U of M campus, and demonstrate financial need (strength
of the candidate’s personal statement, academic achievement, reference
appraisal, and academic promise are also considered). Preference is
given to women applicants over 40 years of age and / or to women
pursuing their first undergraduate degree.
Six to eight
scholarships are awarded annually ranging from $500 to $4,000. Three
UMC students have previously been awarded the Carol E. Macpherson
Scholarship. They are: Carolyn Weber, Bernadina Arias, and Alice
Simon. Please see Claudia Barton or Marcia Walker for an application,
or go to the website listed below. It will never happen if you don’t
try, but it might if you do!

Welcome
to Keith Knapp
I'm
pleased to announce that Keith Knapp, Director of Student Financial Aid,
officially started his work at UMC on December 3. Keith joins us from
the Twin Cities Campus, where he most recently served as a One Stop
counselor for the Office of Enrolled Student Services providing direct
service in the areas of financial aid, registration, and student
accounts receivable. His previous work experience within the University
includes positions with the Office of Student Finance and the Office of
Scholarships and Financial Aid.
As Director of
Financial Aid, Keith has responsibility for the administration and
delivery of all financial aid including federal, state, and
institutional programs including student application, award
packaging, eligibility verification, aid disbursement, account
reconciliation and compliance reporting.
Keith's office is
located in the One Stop Student Center, 170 Owen Hall. Please join me
in welcoming him to the UMC community.

Thanks to the
overwhelming generosity of the UMC Community, $200.00 was raised during
the “Holiday Bizarre Bazaar”. The proceeds will be divided equally and
donated to the Bosnia Project and the Toys for Tots. On behalf of the
UMC Student Ambassadors and Early Childhood Club thanks to each and
everyone of you who made this possible.
Accolades
Mark
E. Huglen, assistant professor of communication, presented “Some
Stable Knowledge” at the National Communication Association (NCA)
Convention in Miami, Florida, November 19-23, 2003. He was also a
participant in the panel “Linguistic Approach to Education” and
respondent to the “Top Competitive Papers on Kenneth Burke.” Mark is
the 2003 and 2004 program planner for the KBS division of NCA. KBS NCA
branch emphasizes studies in communication and integrates disciplines
such as rhetoric, English, philosophy, sociology, and psychology.

Volunteer and celebrate New Year’s at the same time! Organizers of
First Night, the annual New Year’s celebration in Grand Forks, are
looking for volunteers to help at the Dakota Science Center’s exhibits
and also greet visitors beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31

around 8:15 a.m. Samantha Marie has dark hair, is 21 inches long and
