Horticulture Club

We promote horticulture and all it has to offer…from the aesthetic values to the ecological benefits of trees, plants, and flowers. We also strive to strengthen our horticulture knowledge while having fun and learning.

Club's principle activities, events and programs:

  • Hold weekly fundraising plant sales, selling a wide variety of houseplants and specialty crops grown by the club and horticulture students.
  • Create flower arrangements for several campus wide events and activities
  • .

  • Attend the annual Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association (MNLA) ‘Green Expo’ Convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center for FREE!

  • Several educational seminars offered by great speakers on many topics and you can become an MNLA Certified Professional!

  • Compete in the annual Mid-American Collegiate Horticultural Society (MACHS) competition - UMC has placed 1st and 2nd in the past 3 years
  • .

  • Provide tours of the UMC campus greenhouses to various individuals and groups throughout the community.

  • Fun and entertaining events in the greenhouse!

Club's community service:

  • Crookston Cathedral School Mardi Gras Fundraiser - February 2, 2008

  • We helped serve meals in support of the largest fundraiser for the Crookston Cathedral School.

  • Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association Convention - January 9-11, 2008

  • We helped venders and attendees get registered for the event.

  • Crookston Community Supported Agriculture Garden (CSA) - September 14 & 21, 2007

  • We donned gloves and trudged through the mud gleefully to support Crookston’s CSA garden! This was a fun project that allowed us to support the garden that supports the community! We pick vegetables, pulled vines, weighed, washed, and segregated vegetables.

  • Red Trail Vineyard Grape Harvest - September 21, 2007

  • We ventured out to Buffalo, ND, to help with the annual vineyard grape harvest. It was a great opportunity for the club to learn about Viticulture. We learned to harvest process, what some different varieties of grapes are, how to test sugar content of the grapes, how to press them, and of course we learned what each one tasted like!
