Can We
Afford the Future?
Citizens Jury on Funding K-12 Education
Twelve Polk County citizens will convene as a Citizens Jury May 5 through 9 at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) to hear testimony, and offer recommendations about K-12 education. The public is invited to observe the week long series of presentations and deliberations in the Conference Center on the UMC campus. Visitor parking is provided.
The Citizens Jury will explore a wide range of issues related to K-12 Education. Members of the jury will hear testimony from experts and stakeholders including parents and school administrators. After studying the issues, they will debate and offer recommendations regarding financing, outcome goals, and the role of the school in the community. The presentation of the recommendations will be Friday, May 9, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in UMC's Conference Center, Rooms A,B, and C. This presentation is open to the public.
The goal of the project is to bring together average citizens to improve the level of civic discourse about important public policy issues. The Crookston project is part of a state-wide project called "Can We Afford the Future" involving UMC, the Minnesota Extension Service, the Humphrey Institute, and the Jefferson Center. Local coordinators are Mahnomen County Extension Educator Peg Braaten and UMC assistant professor of communication Lynne Mullins.
Disability accommodations will be provided upon request. For a copy of the complete agenda, call 218-281-8681.
