UMC Hosts Second
Technology-Based Elderhostel Session June 22-28
From June 22-28, over twenty people from several states will spend a week at UMC learning about such varied topics as nutrition, quilting, e-mail, the Internet and other computer technologies. They are taking part in the second of four summer sessions of Elderhostel.
The theme for this week-long experience is "Anytime, Anywhere Computing: Day and Night with a Laptop." During their stay, each participant will be issued a notebook computer. Participants will use the computer to learn the basics of e-mail, the Internet, and the Microsoft Windows suite of programs: Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), Access (databases), and Powerpoint (presentations). Other sessions focus on computer technology applications such as the presentation of a computerized family tree maker and using the Internet to access invenstment and stcok market information. Spread throughout the computer sessions are other sessions dealing with the history and technology of quilting and field trips to the Polk County Museum and Dahlgren's Sunflower Processing Plant in Crookston.
UMC is well suited for such a technology-based experience because of its distinctive status as the "Original Thinkpad University" and its extensively "wired" infrastructure. Classrooms are wired to a local area network, which, in turn, connects the entire campus to the Internet. Participants can even access the Internet from the rooms in the campus residence halls where they stay for the week.
In addition to the June 22-28 session, similar sessions are set for July 20-26 and August 3-9, 1997. For further information contact the University of Minnesota, Crookston Office of Outreach and Continuing Education at 218-281-8681 or 1-800-232-6466.
