UMC to Host NAIA Great Plains Volleyball Regional Tournament

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) volleyball program has secured the bid to host the NAIA Great Plains Women’s Volleyball Regional Tournament to be held at Lysaker gymnasium November 20 - 22, 1997.

The regional volleyball tournament is on a rotating basis with the five conferences which play in the Great Plains Region. The region consists of the following Conferences: Nebraska/Iowa Conference; South Dakota/Iowa Conference; North Dakota College Athletic Conference (NDCAC); Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; and the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. The host conference this year is the NDCAC. This is the first time for the NDCAC and for UMC to host the regional volleyball tournament under the new format. Eight teams from the Great Plains region will participate in the tournament with the winner advancing to the National NAIA tournament in San Diego.

In the NDCAC, bids were received from Minot State, Dickinson State, Valley City State, and UMC. Coaches from these colleges submitted their bids to the Athletic Directors and the UMC bid was selected.

Marv Bachmeier, UMC Athletic Director states that "UMC is delighted to have the opportunity to host the Great Plains Regional Volleyball tournament. It will give UMC and the volleyball program a great deal of exposure. I am confident that with the support of the Teambackers and the community of Crookston it will be an outstanding tournament for volleyball fans."

"The Golden Eagles will have the opportunity to play with the best volleyball teams in the region. Hosting the 1997 Great Plains Regional is a great honor for our program and the University. Now the work starts to run a successful NAIA Regional Tournament", according to Kelly Hollands, UMC Head Women’s Volleyball Coach.
