UMC's Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 1983 to recognize those members of the faculty who have made significant contributions to teaching and who have demonstrated high standards in instruction. Holm was cited for his service to students and his “record of being particularly responsive to student needs.” He has a distinguished 25-year career of teaching chemistry courses at UMC and at the East Grand Forks campus of Northwest Technical College. He was also cited for his accomplishments of integrating computer and Internet technology into his curriculum and for pioneering the use of interactive television for distance delivered education. Holm completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Gustavus Adolphus College, his master’s in chemistry at Bowling Green University, and his Ph.D. in chemistry at South Dakota State University. He began work at UMC in 1976 and was promoted to associate professor in 1981. In addition to his teaching and advising roles, Holm has held a leadership role in the Northwest Minnesota Regional Science Fair for the last twelve years. He has also conducted summer research for many years at the University of North Dakota’s Energy Center. His research has resulted in numerous publications and technical reports.
