UMC to Host IHSA Equine Competition Feb. 10-11

UMC's Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Riding Team  will serve as the host for a stock seat or “western” equitation competition February 10-11.  The two-day event will be held at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, on the north end of the campus.  The competition begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10, and continues at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 11.  The event is free and open to the public.  Concessions will be available.

Equestrian teams scheduled to attend include:  U of Wisconsin–River Falls; U of Wisconsin–Madison; U of Nebraska–Lincoln; Ellsworth Community College of Iowa; Iowa State U; Carleton College; Gustavus Adolphus College; St. Cloud State U; South Dakota State U; and UMC.  These teams comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA.

UMC will also host an IHSA hunt seat equitation competition February 24-25 and an IHSA western equitation show March 24-25.

UMC has been a member of the IHSA Zone 6, Region 4, since 1996, and it is known as the “President College” or hub of that region.  UMC’s riding teams have been strong competitors at the zone level and have sent several members on to national competition over the past five years.

IHSA competition provides supplemental riding opportunities for students enrolled in UMC’s Equine Industries Management degree program.  UMC is one of the few schools in the nation to provide such a specialized equine science program.
