James Hersch to Bring Unique Musical Outreach Program to Crookston April 9 What makes nationally acclaimed singer-songwriter James Hersch unique is that when he performs, he performs for an entire community. Hersch will bring his unique musical outreach program to Crookston and UMC on Monday, April 9. Hersch will perform at 7 p.m. in UMC’s Bede Ballroom. The event is free, and members of the Crookston community are encouraged to attend. In preparation for his 7 p.m. performance, Hersch will perform three times during the day at different sites in Crookston. He is set to perform at 10 a.m. at Oak Court Assisted Living Center, 110 Sargeant Street; at Noon at the Care and Share Center, 220 3rd Street East; and at 4:30 p.m. at UMC’s Early Childhood Development Center. Driven by his passion for service learning, Hersch has become known as an advocate for community service. He travels the country teaching college students the value of community outreach by working with them to present concerts that create interaction between these students and their community. Several UMC students will accompany Hersch to the various community concerts during the day. According to Hersch, these performances are geared to “help participants realize the importance of reaching outside of themselves to others.” They also provide inspiration for the evening performance, which will include a video presentation of scenes from the day’s interactions. According to Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, UMC’s Director of Student Activities and Service Learning, “James Hersch’s performances are truly powerful. When we saw a preview at a student activities conference, people were really moved; they were laughing and crying. We are excited about bringing him to Crookston.” Hersch has been writing, singing, and playing his guitar nationwide for nearly 20 years. He began his outreach program in 1994. In recognition of his program, he received the Harry Chapin Award for Contributions to Humanity from the National Association for Campus Activities. The performance is sponsored by UMC Concerts and Lectures and by S.P.A.C.E (Student Programming and Activities for Campus Entertainment).
