Koestner Discussion on Sexual Assault Katie Koestner, outspoken date-rape survivor and sexual assault prevention advocate, will speak at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) on Sunday, March 4. Her address will begin at 7 p.m. in Brown Dining Room of Sahlstrom Conference Center. There will be a question and answer session immediately following the presentation. The event is free and open to the public. Koestner, a victim of date rape herself, went public with her story in 1990. Outraged at the inadequate response from Virginia’s College of William and Mary to her victimization, she took her case to the media. Koestner appeared on the June 3, 1991, cover of TIME magazine and has received national attention for speaking out against date rape. In 1993, she completed a project with HBO, the Lifestories docudrama entitled, “No Visible Bruises: The Katie Koestner Story.” Since graduating from William and Mary in 1994, she has presented her story to hundreds of thousands of students at over 800 colleges, high schools, and military institutions in 47 states and internationally. She has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Geraldo, NBC Nightly New, CNBC Talk Live, The Jane Whitney Show, Morton Downey, Jr., Larry King Live, Entertainment Tonight, and Italian TV, Good Morning America, MTV and many other programs. As an author, Koestner has co-written the guidebook Sexual Assault on Campus: What Every College Needs to Know About Protecting Victims, Providing for Just Adjudication, and Total Sexual Assault Risk Management Strategies for Colleges. Her next book, due out in 2001, is tentatively titled Without Consent, an autobiographical travelogue of her years of presentations to colleges and high schools, and a serious look at the reality of sexual assault for American students today.
